| toshiba drive not reading any discs I have a toshiba m45 s331 with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ 830s drive and for some reason its not reading any cds i put into it. The thing was working fine till a couple of weeks ago then i had to start ejecting it and reinserting the cds till it actually read it, now it doesnt want to read it at all. Now all it does it makes some noise likes its working, the lights comes on and stays on, but it doesnt do anything after that. When i go to my computer and right click on the drive and click on open it gives me an error message saying "D:/ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate it, thank you. |

| Re: toshiba drive not reading any discs Hi and welcome to the forum, you can verify read problems of your drive very simple, just create a MS-DOS Startdisk with CD-ROM support, e.g. easiest way is using a Windows 98(SE) startdisk. Otherwise create according to your Operating System a start or bootdisk and insert DOS driver of burner. Now boot with your created disk into DOS and try to read from CD and (unprotected) DVD media, if they can be read without any problems, then your drive is not faulty. If your lappy contains no floppy disk drive anymore, use a bootable CD-ROM and DvD with your device (e.g. Windows CD) and boot from it. If this is possible, then your drive is not faulty. But if you cant read from any CD or DVD media anymore, then you should claim the unit to your dealer as defect. Take care TOSHIBAer |

| Re: toshiba drive not reading any discs ok this is weird. I inserted a software disk that came with my cell phone and the drive was able to read it. I then inserted the same disks that the drive wasng able to read yesterday and the darn thing reads it perfectly, whats up with that? |

| Re: toshiba drive not reading any discs Quote:
Anyway, you can find updated drivers for your IDE chipset on the manufacturers' webpages, like: Intel: http://downloadfinder.intel.com VIA: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 SIS: http://download.sis.com or contact the Toshiba laptop support. Note that updating the chipset driver often also solves problems that only occure with special types of media! Find out which chipset / IDE busmaster you use: Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager > '+' next to 'Hard Disk Controllers' (Win 2000/XP: '+' next to 'IDE ATA/ATAPI-Controller'). You will see three entries here: 'Primary IDE Controller', 'Secondary IDE Controller' and the make of your busmaster. Take care TOSHIBAer | |

| Re: toshiba drive not reading any discs My problem sounds essentially the same as the original one, save that the computer, a Toshiba Satellite (not sure if thats the name or not ^^ recognises the hardware, but will not actually run the discs inserted. The D drive is shown and i can open it, but the drive is empty like a blank disc. The problem has been on and off for a while (eg. it was working fine yesterday). I've searched the net and found problems similar to, but not exactly like, my own. Any information would be greatly appreciated.(Also, I'm not very computer literate, so advice in layman's terms would be great) |

| Re: toshiba drive not reading any discs I tried that. although it didnt fix the problem, when I logged onto the administrator identity the problem came up with the I/O error from the original question. Could you possibly explain the solution to me, I'm kinda having trouble with it. |
