TEAC DVD+RW DV58E - DVD-Rom reading problem

Hi

I have recently purchased Flight Simulator X on PC DVD-Rom. I have a TEAC DVD+RW DV58E combi drive. When I place the DVD-Rom in the drive it spins for a while but never recognises the DVD. This has happened on previous games but I was always able to get it to boot/recognise the DVD by holding left-shift when closing the tray.

Does anyone know what else I could try to fix this? My DVD drive should read DVD-Rom at x12 speed. Are games being created on higher speed DVD-Roms these days?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Really not sure what else to try
