SONY DVD+RW DW-P50A - Could not perform Fixation error / Power calibration error

Hi all,

I have a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop. It came with a SONY DVD+RW DW-P50A drive. I have been using it from last 18months and I have written n number of cd's and dvd+r/rw's without any problem.

From couple of days when i was trying to write a CD it was giving me "Could not perform Fixation" error and was failing to write the CD. In the log I also read a line which says "Power calibration error". Is this the real error?

When I start to the burn the CD, initially Power-Burn is activated, then it completes Caching of files. After that Burn process started at 16x. It goes to 5% then after a minute I get the error message "Could not perform Fixation". After that it gives me a message saying Burn process failed.

The CD on the which it failed to write, after the process is still like a blank new CD. I.e., burn of CD has not been started at all. I have tried with different media but no result.

Now I have updated the Sony DVD drive firmware to latest Version 1.8f and the Nero version to 6.6.0.8. Still I get the error.

Can anyone of you please tell me what to do?
Is my drive gone?
Is it a h/w problem or s/w problem?
Can it be repaired?
Warranty is over as of now, I want to know if I renew the warranty and then go for support will there be any use?
For support should I go to Compaq or Sony?

I had this problem before, it turned out to be the media. Maybe try 'Disc at once' instead of 'Track at once'.
I've heard that Nero will sometimes have a problem if another burning software is installed (ie easy cd creator), (I've never actually seen this myself, although a friend had the same prob, he reformatted and it worked fine)
Are u using new media?? Maybe try burning a data disc then audio cd etc and see if u get same errors. Also scan for viruses and spyware etc. Then if all else fails, try updating ur FW (firmware)...< Hope this helps > sasarchiver

Thank you for immediate reply.

I was able to solve the problem. The Cause of the problem was the Low Quality Media. There was some problem in Moser bar CD's Box I bought. I again bought some Sony CD's. I was able to write on them.
I even updated the firmware.

Only thing I was surprised was, I was able to write on those moserbar cd's using a different writer in my desktop. I don't how it was possible.

i had the same problem ("fixation error") i cant figure out yet the likely culprit. pls note that i was using the nero 6.6.0.15 and an imation CDRW when i had the error. wat i tried was uninstall the DVDRW and the nero. then deleted the folder of nero under the program files. restarted then installed older version of nero 6.6.0.11 the burning is now ok.

6.6.0.16 should have also worked, not 6.6.0.15.

Hi dvamsi,when i'm searching over net for this problem then i saw this post and thanks to u dude coz i've solved this problem only because of you.

I have same sony drive and same low quality moserbaer cd's.

I register at cdfreaks only to thank you.(But i'm now realizing that cdfreak is just awesome.

I just started having this problem. But I'm using a 50pk of Sony CD-R that I've already used over half of. I haven't installed any new programs, and nero is my only burning prog installed. It's burning DVD's with no problem. Any ideas?

Media quality always variies, even within the same spindle/box, whatever.
Maybe you could check the ATIP of the medias and post the info here?!
