Also sorry about the 5 post rule, but it's something we are trying out as the site goes through a few changes. Hope it's not too bothersome. You should be able to drop in and say hello in the Living Room and reply to another thread or two to have the restriction lifted.

Welcome to the forums, by the way.
Hello Albert,
thanks very much for the welcome! Don`t worry, I`m not sissy.
The 5 posts I`ll reach anyway soon as there are quite a few things that I still don`t understand well enough although I`ve read up a lot in the meanwhile (from here and other places).

And if all else fails, you can flash back...and potentially have a loud yet functional drive.
Okay, thanks for that, so I can skip this step.
I`ll try the firmware from here anyway. As You say I can always flash it back. If I get it working this way it would be great but I`d also like to understand how that region-code things basically work and at the moment there is a problem which I suspect having to do with this and which I`ll describe in more detail in my next post.

Meanwhile I played some more with the SAMSUNG SH-D162D drive in the Cyberhome, as is unmodified that is.

It plays Audio-CDs well but there is a strange problem with DVDs and I don`t quite understand why. I tried about a dozen different DVDs and it plays only the self burned disks (ripped to harddrive) of my buy DVDs. ANY of those self burned DVDs work as it should be, including all commands from the remote control (next, pause, stop, play, fast forward, eject etc.). Only the drive is loud.

However from the various disks I tried it does play only one of the DVDs which I bought. The player recognizes the disks. It says "read disk" and then identifies it as "DVD" (as opposed to "Audio-CD") on the SCART connected TV screen display but after that in most cases the display just freezes. Sometimes it plays a tiny step further until it stops right after the copyright disclaimer finally (in case there is one on the disk). With some DVDs I can then still stop the player and eject the disk on some others the entire system hangs and doesn`t respond to commands anymore so that the only thing I can do is to just switch power off.

So one thing is clear, although it`s loud, the drive basically works in the CyberHome DVD-player but there is something that prevents the drive to play my "buy DVDs". I figure it must have something to to with the region-code setting the SAMSUNG DVD drive came with.

Well, I`ll download the firmware now.
Then I have to check where I can connect the drive to an IDE-ATA controller in a PC (on my main machine there is only SATA), check the region-code setting and flash the firmware.
I`ll report back later what happened.

Maybe meanwhile someone could cast some light on the possible cause for that issue that the SAMSUNG drive plays burned DVDs well but almost no buy DVDs?

SUCCESS !

As I said will report back what I`ve done and how it went:

  • downloaded the SH-D162D_SB00.RPC1.low-noise.bin FW-file from post #1
  • connected the SAMSUNG SH-D162D to a PC with IDE-ATA controller
  • started OS WinXP & drive got detected without problems
  • tried to play a DVD in WinXP but reported "no disk" although there was one in the drive (however I didn`t change any Region-Code settings in WinXP which I guess would have worked to play the DVD though)
  • removed DVD disk from drive

As I wanted to know if and exactly what has changed after the firmware flash, I checked Region-Code drive settings BEFORE and AFTER the flash with a small software tool called "Drive-Region-Info v2.2", as well as with NERO Info-Tool:

Drive-Region-Info v2.2 BEFORE Firmware FLASH:
- THIS DRIVE HAS REGION PROTECTION
- Region Info:
  • Region Code: Not set
  • User: 5 changes left
  • Manufacturer: 4 changes left
  • Status: Not set

NERO Info-Tool (DVD-Features) BEFORE Firmware FLASH:
  • Region Control: RPC-II
  • Region Code: none
  • Changes left user: 5
  • Changes left vendor: 4

Now flashed SH-D162D_SB00.RPC1.low-noise.bin FW-file with Samsungs TSDNWIN Flasher software without problems
(TSDNWIN reported for the old and still to flash new firmware file version "SB00")

Drive-Region-Info v2.2 AFTER Firmware FLASH:
- THIS DRIVE HAS NO REGION PROTECTION
  • Region Info: (none showed)

NERO Info-Tool (DVD-Features) AFTER Firmware FLASH:
  • Region Control: RPC-I
  • Region Code: All
  • Changes left user: n/a
  • Changes left vendor: n/a

- Immediately inserted same DVD as before and now played it just fine on PC (Win Media-Player) without having changed anything (unless the firmware flash of the drive of course)

- Disconnected SAMSUNG SH-D162D drive from PC and mounted in CyberHome CH-DVD 505 DVD-Player again:
  • Drive is now SILENT !
  • played ALL the DVDs which did not work before the firmware flash

SUCCESS in every respect!

Thanks very much and KUDOS to the maker of this FW-file!
Saved an otherwise perfectly fine (and for me still adequate) CyberHome DVD-Player from being scrapped.

Now I can tear the SAMSUNG drive apart to fit the original CyberHome slot front bezel.

Hello everybody

If I try to flash my Samsung SH162D with the new "no noise" firmware in a PC , I can use the new "no noise unit" in another device such a stand alone cd player ?

The fimware could apply in these conditions or he works only in a PC ?

THX in advance

Hi Cristake, that's exactly how I did it, I wanted to repair an Arcam DV88 dvd player, so I got one of the Samsung devices, flashed it on my laptop and then put it into the Arcam, worked perfectly (and still does).

Hope this helps

Kind Regards

Steve

Hi, I'm no expert but I wouldn't have thought you could do this. Assuming the flash software for the liteon drive would even allow the use of the firmware, my guess would be you could end up with an door stop.

Cheers

Greeting.

I'd like to know if anybody tried to install the DSL-710a in other DVD players, like the meridian 596 or the 598. Thanks very much.

Greetings Everyone, and thanks in advance for the great info. I have an Arcam FMJ DV-27 that keeps eating DSL-710A's every 5 or so years. I am also going to try to retro fit the Samsung SH-D162C in it's place, as the DV-27 is quite a satisfying unit otherwise. I have already sourced the drive (awaiting delivery), and have plenty of harware laying around from other PC's. I will probably need advice for downloading the speed patched FW from post # 1, as I am having some trouble...

P.S. Thank You 'Scan C,' Thank You, Thank You...

Just realized I'm gonna 'brick' my drive with the f/w in post # 1. Anybody know of a speed patched rp1 f/w for a Samsung SH-D162C ?
