Replacement DVD-burner for laptop

My wife's Gateway laptop has a Philips SDVD-8820A burner that doesn't make good discs. I did a chat with Gateway support yesterday, described things, and she confirmed that I'm not the only person with these type issues. Without much hesitation, she authorized a 'swap'. They won't/can't guarantee which replacement they'll ship, but these are the ones they have:

LiteOn SSW-8015S
Toshiba TS-L532U
Philips SDVD-8441
Sony AD-5530A
HLDS (Hitachi) GWA-4082N

I'd like something with firmware I can update, first off. Removing 'riplock' (the Philips certainly seems to have it enabled) is another thing I'd like and of course, reasonably good burn quality. I'll still use my desktop for the majority of burning, but I'd still like something acceptable on the laptop.

LG and NEC are the better laptop drives I have seen. I did see a LG GMA-4082n which I am not sure how close it is to the GWA. It was a pretty decent drive. Most laptop drives are OEM and don't get a lot of official firmware support.

I agree with you I, have a Gateway Laptop with Philips SDVD-8441 and it also sucks! Does anyone know of a good sustitute drive to replace the Philips?
