record hidef useing reg vcr?

I have a samsung42" hd tv, and a hd direct tv receiver.I have hdmi out of the reciver in to tv.i have a jvc combo, I can play vhs tapes but i can't seem to record.Is there a way to connect the vcr up so i can record what's on tv screen. I no it won't be hi def. I just won't to be able record when i am not at home. thanks for any help you can give me on this.The tv only has in's av-1 av-2 ,s.video in. xbill

You will need to use a separate video output from your DirecTV recevier into your VCR (if any are available). Without another video output from the source, it won't work. Of course, you could simply upgrade to the DVR unit...and then record in HD.
