Recommend a good scanner

I would appreciate an advise concerning a good scanner. I've got a Samsung SH-S203 and a Pioneer DVR-216, none of which can scan the burned discs

Re: Recommend a good scanner

go to you registry run-> regedit ->

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2588006616-1682881770-3498340425-1000\Software\Nero\Nero8\Nero Toolkit\DiscSpeed\CD Quality \

if you don't find it just search for samsung.

and remove samsung from blocked to enable scanning. Lite-on drives are known to be good scanners but benq drives are the ultimate scanners although now extinct.

Thank you very much, Zerocool! I did not know that scanning may be blocked for drives which support scanning at hardware level. I was wondering why the "Start" button for the DiskQuality test was inactive.

I have Nero Burning ROM 6.6.1.4 installed, and although I cold locate the for Nero Toolkit, there's no entry for Samsung or a value that looks like "blocked to enable scanning". Can you send me a screenshot? Or maybe someone who also uses Nero 6 can take a look in his registry?

Re: Recommend a good scanner

just download the latest cdspeed from http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ and search for samsung in the registry. also remove the tsst as samsung drives have their names start with TSST.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

I found it, and now I can scan! Unfortunately both drive give quite inconsistent scans :-) Time to buy a Lite-On. Don't really get it why those drives have such a bad name here, the recent review gave the iHAS422 a very good assessment.

It's probably because specific LiteOns are reported to be:
  • bad DL burners
  • prone to die more easily than others
  • are better scanners than burners

...although I do agree that the iHAS422 shows promise as a good all-rounder. Not the best, but good.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

LITEONs! The Optiarcs are considered unreliable and I think that it's true. But personally I scan with them! I can say that at least the three models AD-4570A, AD-7200S and AD-7240S are very sharp scanners when set to 1x speed! I have no problems to get the same results in max./toal/average from a 1ECC PIF scan than with a LITEON. The PIE is higher with Optiarcs, but it's again very consistent. The drive just reports the error correcting action happening when reading the disc anyway. If I know it correctly, although still very good, Optiarcs are said to be not the very best readers. Could be the cause for the higher PIE results. Also: The LITEON reports PIEs form a 1ECC scan. Lower PIE max. values are the result. A great thing is that you can select 1EEC scans for PIFs and 8EEC scans for PIEs with DiscSpeed on the Optiarcs.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

I see an even newer model on the global site of Lite-On - iHAS524. Can not find any information in the forum so far.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

Judging from here

http://www.liteonit.com/global/index...=298&Itemid=67

seems that it is not a true lite-on drive but an optiarc re-badge. so it will be a lousy scanner.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

What?

No!

The AD-7240S is an original Sony Optiarc design with chipset NEC MC-10045.

The iHAS324 is an original LITEON design with chipset MEDIATEK MT1879E. Link: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/lite-24...2/#post2254140.

If you read again eyeman is referring to the iHAS524, not the iHAS324. If the iHAS524 is confirmed to be an Optiarc AD-7240S then it will be a good burner but will not support the same scanning capabilities of a MediaTek LiteOn.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

Oh, I'm sorry.

And yes. BEWARE! If NEC chip is confirmed, then the iHAS524 is not considered a reference scanner in communities as this!

Sorry again.

Re: Recommend a good scanner

So Lite-On iHS324 has a MediaTek MT1859L chipset, and iHAS424 has the newer MT1879E. But is the newer a model beter scanner?

Re: Recommend a good scanner

they seem to have the same hardware, I mean the top casing has similar kind of wedges as the optiarc. That's why I got mistaken, it seems 524 is a mediatek drive.
