Optical drives in enclosure, jumper Master or Slave or...?

Hi all.

Excuse my ignorance but I just have to ask this; does it really matter how I jumper my CD/DVD burners when mounted in enclosure, connected via USB or FireWire?
Are there any recommendations specific for the chipset enclosure uses?

Don't think I'm alone questioning this and when our knowledged members post like in quote, I really get confused.

Master or CS, IIRC. But mainly it requires to be master.
It's really an trial and error game....

Yeah, but why _chef_?

My enclosure is equiped with Ali M5621 USB2 chip. It also has a Oxford 911 FW chip but I won't test that right now.
To begin with I'll do some basic tests (transfer rate test in Nero CD-DVD Speed and "create image" test in Nero), with drive jumper in different positions.
Mobo USB controller: Asus P4P800 onboard , WindozeXP SP1.

1. BenQ 1640 jumper Master.

Okay, we can see that with my setup, jumper setting has no effect at all. Heck the drive performs alike even with no jumper.
We can rule out the general statement quoted in #1 post; "They just don't work if they are set to slave", because this is not true, in my enclosure "they work"...!

More tests comming later.

Re: Optical drives in enclosure, jumper Master or Slave or...?

Thanks etp and rolling56.
I hope other members with different USB/FW chip in their enclosure also can make some tests in future...

While drive was running without jumper, I also performed a write test.
Backed up an old movie ISO on RICOHJPN-W11, 4x DVD+RW.
(Note, can't run QS test on this setup.)

No jumper at all, let's see.

Good question - I cannot answer it honestly...
The big impact seems to come from the enclosure chipset anyway. Darn stuff.

Re: Optical drives in enclosure, jumper Master or Slave or...?

Nice tests pinto2. So it can be done with Master, Slave and None. But I personally would not set it to None because I would lost the jumper pin.

Re: Optical drives in enclosure, jumper Master or Slave or...?

It depends entirely on the enclosure/burner combination, although I believe that setting to Master is likely to be the safest bet under most circumstances. For example, some older Benqs were very picky about the enclosure used and some even had to be set to Slave. Fortunately they've ironed out that in their newer drives, although finding the best enclosure for any given drive is still a crapshoot.

Don't think we are looking for "safests bet" here. The question is more about if the jumper has anything to do with it at all...

I would like te see more tests on enclosures with other chipset's like Cypress and Prolific.

Thanks zevia.
