One problem I have with my addon card is the fact that I cannot flash it through the control software (in the configuration pannel). I must flash through DOS.
When i turn off the card (through system configuration) I can see the option to flash it but it is not enabled (it is greyed out). When I turn ON the card I don't see any option to flash through the control pannel (hope I am clear enough ???)
Any Idea? I am running the latest firmware and driver.
This card was a PATA card flashed into ATA card (Sil 0680-2 of course).

Thanks zevia. For some strange reason the DOS flasher hangs after displaying "SiI 0680 Version 2" but I managed to get it to flash with the Windows method in the end.

bichonn, I didn't have the flash tab until I upgraded to the 1.2.25.1 drivers. I also see the Flash tab now appears in the device manager sil 0680 controller properties as well.

    guys:

i'm sure you're aware there are 2 bios'. one is the raid one is the standard ide controller bios. i always flash with the non-raid bios. and i have never been able to flash via windows. i keep plenty of copies of my win98se boot floppies around. then just add the flash exe and bin file, and flash from floppy.

cmisenko, by erasing the cards bios using the UpdFlash tool and installing the 1.2.25.1 drivers, I have my BenQ 1650 working at UDMA mode 2 (burst rate 23MB/s) and no problems booting off my SATA drive.

Also please try to use one post. You have half and hour to edit an existing one. Thanks.

The older BenQ drives (DW1620, DW1640) and all NEC drives are NOT supported in UDMA mode with this card. The newer BenQ drives (DW1650, 1655, 1670 and their Sony rebadges) are supported in UDMA2 or UDMA4.

I have two variations of the 0680A-based cards, SIIG and Syba. Although the SiI chipset is the same, but the Flash chips are different, as well as the board layout. With the SIIG card, the BIOS seemed to be capable of being updated with Windows. However, that option wasn't available with the Syba card. Nevertheless, I flashed all 3 cards (1 SIIG and 2 Syba) via W98SE DOS and FDD.

WRT to drive recognition, I had both a 1655 and 810A non-R (1640-clone) on one channel and both bursted at 24 MB/s with SIIG and Syba cards. I had the 111L (M) and 16H5S (S) on the other channel, and the 111L only bursted at 3 MB/s while the 16H5S wasn't even recognized in Windows. But all drives were recognized during the SiI start-up screen. The NEC 3500A was recognized in start-up screen, but didn't show up in Windows.

Try erasing the cards flash using the DOS flasher and then let Windows detect the drives. It gives you a much faster boot and still works perfectly.

The card doesn't need the bootstrap loader to work in Windows. If you run the UpdFlash tool at DOS, one of the options is to erase the entire Flash. Doing this stops the card from booting at system startup but still works perfectly under Windows. BTW, the card can be reflashed afterward, even in Windows (if the tab appears) after it's been erased.

    Gotcha...

Considering how I unintentionally erased a Flash chip before, I'm a bit hesistant to try it.

But since this is just a card and not a drive, and with your assurance, I guess it doesn't hurt to try it. In the readme file of the UpdFlash program, I didn't see the option to erase the chip. So would: updflash -DEAD start the 6-byte commad sequence to erase the chip?

I just ran UpdFlash v3.19 with no parameters and it presented me with a menu. I think it was option 4.

Hmm, there are variation of Chip type. I see KTL has SST 39SF010, C0deKing has AMD An29F010B, and mine Winbond W29C911A. I wonder if this affects the performance of the card (recognition, drive support) since I cannot make my 1640 to UDMA2 while KTL said his card can get 24mb/s burst on DRU-810A.

Both of my cards are revision 2 from SIIG bought from newegg. KTL, which card did you try on your DRU-810A?

zevia, I tried both the SIIG (rev 2 also) and Syba cards, and both reported 23-24 MB/s from the 810A. I don't recall what the Flash chip on the Syba cards was, so that's another type, which Windows can't see.

Hey CK, I tried it on the SIIG card and indeed, the Flash chip was erased. However, there was no difference with drive recognition and burst rate as before: 1655 & 810A at 24 MB/s, 111L at 3 MB/s , and 16H5S unrecognized. If no drives are connected to the controller, the Device Info and Flash BIOS tabs are not present under Device Manager's Properties. However, once the drives are connected, those tabs appear.
