| My ARTEC External CD Burner DVD Combo Drive CD-RW 52x is brand new, it's burned maybe 10 CDs since I got it, and now, it doesn't want to read any blank media, it just keeps spitting it back out and asking for a CD. At the same time my HP DVD Writer 300n stopped working, so that leaves me completely without burning capabilities, unfortunately, I can't afford right now to just go out and buy MORE hardware. Are there are known reasons for my new combo drive to start doing this and are there are fixes? If so, I would appreciate the help, thanks. |

| Hi and welcome! at first check if there is something wrong with your system. Also open the case and check the cables. I had some, that went bad, so it's worth looking carefully (that includes removing and reattaching). Also check jumper settings. If your HP drive has gone bad, it's recommended to remove or at least to disconnect that drive. In that case, you should also set your Artec (I consider their products as crap) to master and connect it to the end of the cable. To sort out issues with your Windows installation, try the drive in another computer, maybe you have a friend who could help you here. If your combo drive is really faulty, then complain at the vendor you bought the drive from Michael |

| Thanks for your response, I will try all of the above. Some developments though; the 300n HP Writer reads DVDs and even burns DVDs, however, still doesnt recognize blank CD media... I didn't realize that it could be either/or with a faulty drive, but apparently it works fine with DVDs. Also, the combo drive, although sparingly, does decide to work. Yesterday I tried to burn a CD and it worked, 2 CDs burned in a row, and now it is right back to it's old antics of just rejecting the blank CDs. Also, I learned that my computer doesnt recognize the drive until after I put a CD in, beforehand the drive letter (J) doesn't even show up in my drive manager under My Computer. If any of these symptoms require alternative solutions/fixes, I'd appreciate the help and knowledge, thanks again for the help! |

| Hi, seems, there might be something messed up with your Windows installation. I will not recommend reformatting and reinstalling yet. Also, I still think, checking and replacing the IDE cables is worth giving a shot. As I already suggested, best would be to test the drives in another system. If this is not possible, then get a Linux Live System like Knoppix or Kanotix. Both have Nero-like burning software aboard, so you can test your drives in a clean environment. Get the .ISO file of one, burn it according to the instructions/FAQ on the project website and boot from that CD. You can then try the remaining drive if that works. Michael |

| Hi LADO, welcome to CDF  Try booting from an Operating System CD (Windows?). Don't forget to change the Boot Sequence in your BIOS to boot from the combo drive. If it boots, it's a software/OS issue. If it doesn't, there's a good chance that the part that reads CDs is dead.
