Can anyone point me to an SATA DVD writer that is capable of running Disc Quality tests in CD Speed? The list of supported drives on the CD Speed web site seems really out-of-date (the BenQ 1640 isn't even on it), and not sure what drives I should be considering.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

my liteon works fine with a ata-sata converter. so does my nec. so I use the two for scanning dvds and cds respectively.

Can't you use a PCI IDE controller card?

I love life...Yeah, I'm sad, but at the same time, I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like...It makes me feel alive, you know. It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a beautiful sadness.

Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.

I am so glad that GWB's 8 year COD game is finally over.

The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them-words shrink things that seemed limitless when in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for the want of an understanding ear. - Stephen King, intro to "The Body."

I own a Samsung SHW163A that is connected to a Promise PDC 20579 SATA controller. After editing a registry entry, I am able to scan DVD media with that drive, also Kprobe can be used for that. It is not possible to scan CD media (you can, but the results are mere fantasy). Also, I experienced erratic scanning results with some media.

So, I suggest thinking about a Liteon drive in connection with either a IDE interface card or an external USB enclosure. Similar like the Samsung, recent Liteon DVDRW drives are useless for scanning CD media (but good DVD scanners).

That would be an excellent option. The problem is that I don't have a PCI slot free in the case. I guess I could remove the Firewire card. I have two external Firewire hard drives, but I can daisy chain them together and connect them to the one Firewire port built in to the computer.

Hmm, that is something to consider. Thanks.

Thanks, Michael. But looks like that drive is not available in the US.

And importing it from the UK would probably be too pricey to make it worth it.

Huh. I didn't know there were ATA-SATA converters. I will look into that. Thanks!
