Hi All

Perhaps someone here may be able to relieve my frustration with the issue I'm having.

I have a Toshiba A4 with a Matshita UJ-831s burner (firmware version 1.40). I'm running Nero Premium 7.1.

DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-RWs all burn fine.
But the simple CD-R burning is giving me a headache for some reason.

I've created a pile of coasters trying to burn CD-R at normal speeds. What I've noticed is I am able to get success but I have to manually reduce the speed of the burn to say x8 otherwise it craps out on me.

Is there a way I'm able to fix this issue at all?
(Its only recently that I've noticed that I can burn a slow speeds).

Thanks for any advice (short of throwing the drive away and geting another).

Cheers
Tropolite

Perhaps you should try different CD-R media?

I get excellent results with Verbatim Crystal Super AZO CD-R media on my Matshita UJ-840S at 24x. The same is true for Plextor branded Taiyo Yuden CD-R media, but Taiyo Yuden CD-R media is probably easier to find as Verbatim "Pastel" CD-R.

Ahh... Thanks DrageMester

*I knew there was something I forgot to add to my original post.*

I've tried several differently branded media. Verbatim's, TDK, Imation. and a couple crappy brands like Princo.

Maybe it's just peculiar to the drive itself?

Any other ideas/suggestions DM?

Perhaps your drive isn't that good at burning CD-R media?! Just because the 831 and 840 models number are close doesn't mean that the drives are necessarily close in performance.

Other than trying some high quality CD-R media as I suggested above (not all types of Verbatim CD-R media are excellent) or burning at a lower burn sped as you have discovered yourself, there's nothing much to suggest other than getting another drive which is more difficult for a laptop than for a desktop computer.

Dude, i have the same problems, the problem is that the firmware is crap.
There are no updates available, i've been trolling the net for weeks and anoying Toshiba support a lot.

Summary - sorry we don't intend to release updates for this drive so tough luck.

Myslef, i'm looking at getting a new drive or buying an external.

Sorry mate - the drive is poo

Thanks econnemisis... I kinda figured the firmware may have been the issue.

I wasn't too sure if it was the that or Toshiba's Normal/Silent CD Spin settings that interupted the proper function of the burner.

It seems to spin up and slow down continually - whether that is to conserve power, even though you have the system on mains power. Big downer.

I'd be interested in what burner you're looking at to replace the drive econnemisis. I'd appreciate a heads-up once you have an idea.

Cheers
