i also am using sonic record now v7.3 and nero v6.6 and they both will only give me 8x, so i'm thinking its the media, but idk maybe i need a firmware upgrade? also i know that its a division of panasonic, but when i google matshita or whatever it comes up with nothing

You have to contact your Laptop manufacturer to get support for the drive which also includes firmware.
Matshita doesn't give support - they only sell OEM drives.
