| Hey ya'lll Just thought I'd share this with you guys, 'cause I put alot of hours into this before I figured it out. I've got an MSI mobo with the JMicron JMB363 chipset. This chipset is supposed to handle the SATA connections but what it also does is translate the 2nd IDE-connection to SCSI, with the purpose of being able to create a RAID between 1 IDE-connected drive and 1 SATA-connected drive. I've also got 3 plextor writers (PX-712A, PX-760A, PX-W482448A). My initial setup was IDE-HD (with WINXP installed) master on 1st IDE, PX712A slave on 1st IDE, PX-760A master on 2nd IDE, PX-W482448A slave on 2nd IDE. I found out that when writing or reading with the PX-760A (didn't matter if it was a CD or DVD or at which speed) it always created buffer-underruns (when writing on the PX-760A, when reading on whichever drive I was writing with). I changed my configuration so that the 760A was slave on 1st IDE and 712A was master on 2nd IDE. Now I only tried copying between the 760A and 712A, which off course gave the same type of problems. I thought my 760A was defective and returned it to plextor, but they found nothing was wrong with it and I got it back. Then I searched these forums and read something about the DMA-setting onde IDE-channels. When trying this I found that WINXP recognised the drives connected to the 2nd IDE as SCSI. This was due to the JMicron-chip. Now there is a BIOS-setting where you can tell the JMicron-chip to let the 2nd IDE act as IDE, but this didn't change anything. Finally I tried the following setting: 760A(master) and W482448A(slave) on 1st IDE and HD(master) and 712A(slave) on 2nd IDE. Now everything works just fine (no more buffer-underruns). Conclusion: When you've got a JMB363 don't connect an optical drive to master on 2nd IDE. Hope this info is usefull to some of you.

| My motherboard ASUS P5W DH Deluxe have 1 JMicron JMB363 SATA and 1 JMB363 IDE connectors, in addition to 1 Intel ICH7R IDE connector. I have no problem connecting my PX-760SA to the JMB363 SATA connector and 2 DVD Burners (NEC 4570 and BenQ 1620) to the JMicron IDE, despite that in the manual for the JMicron IDE connector it says "This connector does not support ATAPI devices". I'm using the mobo BIOS 0903.

| This JMicron SM363 controller is relatively new and support is not as robust as it should be. From forum postings in XS and my own personal findings, earlier BIOS in quite a few mainboards did not support it well (PIO only on IDE) and proper UDMA support was only achieved in later BIOS versions eg. Asus P5W DH Dlx (beta 090x onwards), Gigabyte DS3 (F4.x onwards). So do check the UDMA status before doing any fast burns. That said, once it is set in UDMA, burst rate as tested by CDSpeed on my P5W is 25MB/s and it works quite well even at 18x burns with the Samsung SH182D burner I am testing. Heheh, I even flashed my TDK 882N successfully to the latest LD firmware on the JMicron. PS: zevia, the Asus manual is plain wrong as the official specs state clearly ATAPI support as I had posted earlier in XS, http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...7&postcount=70 http://www.jmicron.com/JMB363.html

| hah, a fellow o'cer and CD freak, nice! My lowly E6300 is presently at 400FSB, 2.8 GHz cos I am too cheap to go for a E6600 which is what this mobo deserves... plenty fast enough for now tho', totally kills my 2.4C@3.42 in my old rig in Shrink encoding. And all at stock volts except Vmch at 1.55v, EIST/C1E enabled.

| Well, it's nice to hear not everyone got the same problems I had. But maybe someone could explain to me why WINXP recognises the drives connected to the IDE-connector controlled by the JMicron-chip as SCSI. This way I can't select DMA as the transfer-mode. I also think it's strange that I only got trouble when an optical drive is connected as master on the JMicron-controlled IDE-connector...

| Do a burst test on the JMicron and see if it is in DMA mode, I get 25MB/s as stated previously. In earlier BIOS which supports only PIO, it's a miserable 1MB/s. anyway, even on the P5W mobo, Asus hasn't settled things well cos I lose the controller/burners on S3 resume and the whole PC kinda freezes on and off till I reboot. btw zevia, this issue isn't fixed by the latest 1101 beta fw either.

| It's partly wrong. Except of chipset-based IDE controllers, PCI-based Silicon Image 0649 is shown as IDE channels in Windows. Of course you need to apply the driver for 0649.  |

| Got this problem of no DMA with the Jmicron JMB363x on a brand new 965i mobo from Gigabyte (d965p-dq6). Set the BIOS to get IDE support working but the channels only allow PIO and not DMA. Makes my sony DWG120A drive very slow. Sounds like I need a BIOS update from Gigabyte....( Would I be better off allowing Windowes to operate these in SCSI mode? It did seem to make the boot process flaky, especially with a disk left in the sony drive. Any advice appreciated..) Ian |

| Well, I've tried out some things. I've alreayd got the latest bios, but it doesn't seem to fully support the JMicron-chip, since changing the setting from RAID to IDE doesn't change anything. I've also installed the latest driver MSI supplies, but this doesn't change anything either. I did a burst-test on all my writers and I stick by my earlier conclusion: Don't connect an optical drive to Primary on the JMicron controlled IDE-channel As long as none of my writers is connected like this, they give me a burst over 20MB/s.

| Fishstickey, maybe it's the motherboard but let's cross-check what JMicron BIOS and drivers you have installed. My JMicron BIOS is v1.06.22 and driver 1.12.1.0 (see attachment). The 760SA is connected to the JMicron SATA (recognized as 760A), while the JMicron IDE connects NEC 4570 (Master) and BenQ 1620 (Slave). They all work fine.

| http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=193225 I have something similar (see above link) with the jmicron 361 controller. The difference is that for me it is simply impossible to get udma for my optical devices, whereas putting my (only) harddisk in the jmicron SATA slot gives it UDMA just fine (in fact, better than when I put it in one of the Intel slots: jmicron gives me udma - 6, while Intel gives me udma - 5) Since the performance of an optical drive without dma is simply unacceptable (not to speak about the cpu use when writing cd's), I really need to find a solution soon... I also am unable to install the jmb361 driver that MSI supplies: the installer crashes with the error "UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices: Error". Do you guys think I need this driver to get acceptable behaviour? the bios of the jmicron controller is 1.05. I hope someone can help me d. |

| Hello, I believe i'm hitting a similar issue. I have a Asus P5B Deluxe. My Samsung SH-W162C (latest firmware) is connected to the single IDE connector as master. I have only one other HDD connected to SATA port. I can burn most DVDs but if it is a new DVD+RW because Nero (or imgburn) fails to format it. If I try to burn a previously formatted disk then everything is fine. | I think there are many problems with the Jmicron. YSS (the japanese ODD freak) got a P5B Deluxe and because of the Jmicron he says he is not able to run Plextools......He also said that there are problems with formating BD-Re and he also had some initial problems with Kprobe. As far as I know he has not solved all the problems... So maybe the Jmicron is not the best chip around for DVD burning.... |

| I've been having the same problems but had put it down to my lite-on not liking to type of DVD+RW media I was trying, then this weekend I had my first problem with a DVD+R which had been ok so far which got me searching the net today to find loads of other people with simular problems and the common part was JMicron JMB363. Anyway I came a post (link below) where someone in the past week had got sent the beta version of the next jmicron driver (v1.17.04) to try from jmicron. I tried it and it's solved all my problems with my Gigabyte P965-DS4, all my DVD+RW media now works. Post with driver link |
