Installing 2nd DVD burner....

My Dell E510 computer came with a DVD burner (Philips DVD8801 crossflashed to a BenQ 1650) and I just bought a second burner (Lite-On 160P6S) and I've got some install questions...

Dell had the Philips/BenQ drive connected on the end of the IDE cable and the drive setting was Cable Select.

My Lite-On manual recommends setting to Master and installing on a separate IDE channel, but my computer only has one IDE channel.

I tried connecting the Lite-On at the end of the IDE connector and connected the Philips/BenQ drive to the middle IDE connecter and I set both drives to Cable Select.

I tried burning a disc with the Philips/BenQ and it wouldn't burn faster than 1.75X (terrible!).

Before I go any further....does anybody have any ideas or tips?

I'd say make it master/slave either way, make sure both drives are recognised in bios, use 80 wire IDE cable and finally check DMA settings (should be UDMA) for both drives.
Is your harddrive SATA?

Re: Installing 2nd DVD burner....

Both drives work.....it's just that the Philips/BenQ was burning poorly. I currently just have the Philps/BenQ hooked up until I figure this out.....I just did a burn and it worked fine by itself. When both drives were connected, they were both visible in Device Manager and they both would play DVDs fine.

Where do I check to make sure they are setup UDMA?

And if it were you, which drive would you put where on the cable and which would you set as master and slave? Thanks.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616 -DMA settings.
Make master whichever drive u'll be mostly using for burning. If u see any probs, flip them over.
Cheers

Re: Installing 2nd DVD burner....

I have WinXP MCE. I just checked and DMA is good to go on all channels. One interesting thing.....there are two Primary IDE channels listed and one Secondary IDE channel?

As far as master/slave, does the master drive typically connect to the end of the IDE cable?

Yes, that is the most common recommendation.

Re: Installing 2nd DVD burner....

Glad I saw this. I was just about to post a similar problem.

I have a HP lightscribe drive, fitted it to my dell and this also burns slowly.

I would however need a simple explanation of how to correct the problem. I am a newbie to hardware issues such as this.
I thankyou for any help...

Re: Installing 2nd DVD burner....

Weird! When u connect both drives, delete these primary/secondary channels and reboot. That should do it.
