IDE-to-SATA converter for optical drive?

CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers Discuss, IDE-to-SATA converter for optical drive? at Hardware forum; Hi, Does the IDE-to-SATA converter work for a IDE DVD-ROM or DVD-writer? Since the mobo only have 1 IDE port or even 0 in the new ICH8 southbridge, we may have to convert the IDE CD/DVD-ROMs & writers to SATA connection. Is there a recommended converter in the SG market?

    Hi,

    Does the IDE-to-SATA converter work for a IDE DVD-ROM or DVD-writer?

    Short answer is yes.

    But unless you have chipset-based Intel SATA controllers, the chances are good that you will have problems, as many SATA controllers are not ATAPI friendly.

    You may get reading and writing functionality, but no firmware flashing or working utilities like CDSpeed and others. It's worth a try, but keep your expectations low.

    Visit the IDE controller thread in the hardware forum for more ideas on a PCI card.

    You would be better off with a proven external enclosure based on teh Prolific 3507 chipset or possibly, the ne Cypress chip.
