there were a few details in your description that were not obvious to a moron like myself. since i did get it working, i thought i would fill them in for others who are in the same boat.
1. i have a HP lightscribe DVD 940i. it doesn't say i on the front of the drive. that's "i" for internal. the updated firmware can be found at: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/d...HL07.stock.rar
2. i downloaded the flash utility at: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/utilities.html (it's the Flash Utility for LiteOn Based Optical Drives -- if you're confused, apparently HP sells the liteon drives under the HP name).
and followed the instructions at: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=190420
3. if you're like me, you might not know what a .rar file is. it's like a zip file and you can download the unpacker Extract Now at: http://www.download.com/ExtractNow/3...ml?tag=lst-3-1
4. i extracted the flash utility, made a copy of the EEPROM. then i extracted the firmware (HL-07). i was confused by the fact that the file looked like "18A1H.HL07.stock" i was concerned that the .stock was the incorrect ending. however, it's actually a .exe file. i just didn't realize it. so when i used the "write flash" command in the flash utility and pointed to the 18A1H.H07.stock file (i had to click on "show all file types"), it worked great.
my HP lightscribe DVD 940i actually recognizes disks it didn't recognize before.

however, the other problem i am having with my drive, which is that it suddenly started reading and writing at 2 Mb per second (perhaps related to a physical move of the computer -- i'm going to poke around with the cables). this is still happening even with the new firmware. if anyone has had this problem, please let me know how to fix it.

Hello all;
First I have read this entire thread and similar ones at codeguys. I have a HP 940i. I burned maybe 5 disks and now it doesn't work. I reads oem disks. But it will not burn anything. My goal to crossflash the HP 940i with lite-on 18A1H.HL07 firmware.
-I have tried various media brandname and generic
-I looked in Google and that how I got here.
-I have downloaded EVERY utility and followed the directions best I could, and NOTHING has worked. So I assume I am missing something.
-I used Flash Utility and nothing happened
-I used EEprom 3.7.2, Discinfo, Omnipatcher DVRFlash all without success
Any help would be GREATLY APPRICIATED!!

Update , I found bin files http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=207033. I backed up my oem bin using EEPROM and then used Flash Utility and for some reason with this bin HL09 it took. Now I am still having issues with burning my question is on the LiteOn site the firmware download is HL06 in the above thread is HL09? Os HL09 overclocking the drive? Should I flash the HL06?

I am new and am not really sure if I am in the right part of this forum, but Ihave 2 questions 1: what do you think of this deal http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...L5C-_-27140023 2 :Maxell Gold 16 times write DVD-R comes in 2 shades of Gold and the brighter shade of gold has for some reason yielded far less write errors. Has anybody else noticed this??
