Firmware

Firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device like your CD/DVD player or writer. This means the firmware is stored on a small proportion of memory that is located on the optical drive. Flashing firmware is serious business, and although it can restore or improve functionality of the drive, it is generally not recommended for novice users. Wrongly flashed drives can become useless, and often factory warranty is not valid after flashing the firmware.
