Ok this is definitely a BTC.
Model number on the drive sticker is 1016IM.
Also, the stickers on the drive look exactly like the stickers I have seen on other BTC drives.
Manufactured in China.

I updated the firmware to A07F.

Then I ran an MCC 004 create data disc test.
Started burning at 16X CAV, but then dropped to 12X CLV for the last portion of the disc.

I would expect to need one of the new 8X certified DVD+RWs for this, but I'll test with various 4X DVD+RW types tonight.

Verbatim 8x DVD+RW media going to be expensive. Perhaps US$3 initially. 470GB for US$300. Just a little cheaper than Hitachi 400GB HDD.

The scan looks much better after dropping to 12x speed, will be interesting to see more results. I hope you post some more results here.

Transfer rate test on the above MCC004 disc.
Only 8X CAV read for recordables? bleh! Should be 16X like the NEC 3500!
Especially with the excellent reading capabilities of this drive.

Wow, it actually beat LiteOn in that MCC004 test.

Then again, dropping to 12x helped.

LOL! Aren't BTC and LO the last companies using MediaTek chipsets for their DVD burners?

I am currently adding support for the BTC 1016 drive to my MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool. There is a problem with the -RW tables, the media code table is one entry shorter than the speed id table. It would be fine if someone having this drive and a DVD-RW disk could contact me by PM to figure this out.

...so, what is the final opinion here? As some may know, the BF Staples IO Magic drive is sometimes being delivered with the BTC 1016IM drive. Most people are just returning it. However, I am wondering just how good/bad the drive is. Is it possible that they need to flash to the latest BTC firmware to fix all of the errors they are seeing with the media?

Thank you

Latest firmware always helps
I personally have no "final" opinion on the drive.
I would need to test further to form any conclusions.

As you can see I have been playing with my Emprex drive and got the results below from a disk I burnt on it. Now this means nothing to me, can some explain it to me and is it good or bad?

Accroding to the test result, I think it's the good one.

I build & repair computers and have 4 networked in our home. I will NEVER EVER by anything with BTC or Emprex on it again. Emprex DVD-ROM drives from Fry's refused to update their firmware. 4 GB Microdrive overheats so that you cannot even xfer a large file. After using BTC/Emprex DVD writer, then switching to a BenQ, WOW!!! I had no idea how badly the BTC & Emprex were doing. I have come to the conclusion that there is a very good reason Fry's can sell BTC/Emprex stuff so cheap, because it IS cheap. Save your money and get something/anything else.
So far I am happy with our:
Sony DVD-Rom DDU1612
Lite-On DVD-Rom 166S
Lite-On CD Writer 52723S
BenQ DVD Writer 1640

IMHO
