If u can't choose. Why don't you buy both of them. Try the Sony DRU500A. This burner can write DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW/CD-R/CD-RW. So he writes everything.

Who is everybody? Really, the Sony drive should be what you need.

If you want to think in the future buy a DVD+R/+RW recorder as this will be the winner.

For those who have hibernated: The Sony is a ±R(W) combo drive... and if you think about future, then you shouldn't buy anything. It will be obsolete after installing

Hi

I've finally decided to get myself a DVD Writer and I thought I'd better consult with the vast knowledge of the CDFreaks Forum members

I think I've narrowed it done to these 2 drives the Sony DRU-500A and the Pioneer A05 (I'm still open to other suggestions)

At the moment I'm heading towards the DRU-500A as it writes both +R/RW and -R/RW discs at the same speeds as the Pioneer A05, and it also writes CDr's at 24x compared to the Pioneers 16x (but I'm not all that bothered about CDr speed as I have a Lite-on 40x burner)

I see that dabs.com is going to sell the DRU-500A at £280 but they don't have the A05 listed yet
Anyone know how much the A05 will cost roughly?

At the moment the only thing that's making me still think about the A05 is all the good reports about the A03 and A05
What have the previous Sony models been like?

My main purpose for the drive will be for backing up films that I've captured from my Sky+ box (Sky+ is just like a PVR incase you don't know)

Any help will be grealty appreciated
Thanks
Stu

I sort of am in the same shape. I have a Liteon burner now overclocked to 52x and a Toshiba 1502. I have my Plextor USB2 24x to my wife but I am seriously considering the new Sony DRU-500A or even the USB2 version whose version numbers I don't remember, except it is exceptionally over-priced.

I'd love to hear anything about these Sony's but I guess they are still very rare and very pricey to be out and around.

I have one of the Sony DRU-500As. I also have a lite-on 40x writer. I have yet to write any DVD- media, but it writes + media great. And $350 for the internal version isnt a bad price either. If you want an external, just pick up an external USB2 or FireWire shell if you need. I recommend it, just my 2 cents.

Is the DRX500UL, the external version of the DRU-500A? I thought I might try that one if it is the same.

They were first available in Tokyo two weeks ago or so. Instantly sold out.

For Mt. Rainier: Wait.

For DVD rewriting: Buy Ricoh MP5120A or HP DVD100i.

For DVD writing (write-once): Buy Pioneer DVR-A04/A03.

For both: Buy Sony DRU-500A or wait for NEC/LG/Plextor...

For 4x DVD-R media:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7098

I'm not sure whether the discs are truly 4x-capable.

It depends on many things.

1. Purpose: to create your own DVD video? to copy existing DVD? to backup your HDD?

2. Price: Ricoh MP5125A is cheaper than Pioneer DVR-A04 in Seoul. Pioneer DVR-A05 is 20,000 Yen cheaper than Sony DRU-500A in Tokyo. In the US market, Sony DRU-500A costs as little as under $250. It may not be easy to find cheap DVD+R media in many countries.

3. Compatibility: It may not be possible to use recorded DVD+R media on some DVD-ROM drives and standalone DVD players. Likewise, it may not be possible to use recorded DVD-R media on some other drives and players.

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/c...st_dvdrom.html

There are most compatibility lists in sites like VCDHelp.com.

http://vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers

4. Volume: How many write-once and rewritable disks will you buy and spend during the next five weeks and ten weeks?

I don't know where you live and how many DVD disks you will need.

Since 4x DVD-R media are very rare to find yet, the best way to go is 2.4x DVD+R + 2.4x DVD+RW. Ricoh MP5125A and Sony DRU-500A. Sony DRU-500A which can write to both DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW is the best choice if you can afford one.

If you want to wait for a few more weeks or even months, watch out for NEC ND-1100A and other 4x DVD-R/+R drives from Sanyo, TDK, and other makers.

BTW, cross-posting or posting the same thing in more than one place) is not allowed. Your thread at the DVD Software was deleted (not by myself) since it contained the same question.
