Greetings raygay!
Unfortunately, the firmware for this Hammer Storage version does not support writing DVD-R DL media.
Please see the very bottom of this page: http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/231/8

This drive came onto the channel 2 months back under Panny's own label and it's supposed to be a slightly updated Nec oldie [not the 3xxx series] to accomodate the DVD-RAM feature.

This drive costs less than £20, that's the type of quality for you.... you've been informed.

Now the other 2 models [9573/9574] might be real Pannys cos one of them will accept a DVD-RAM with its cartridge but you know what expensive jap stuff are like... expensive but same performance [or less, the audacity of it !!] for we are robots and we automatically accept anything from the rising sun as godspell and we will pay, pay, pay for we believe in S**y, P*****c ...... they are gifts from the gods..

Now, what does that tell you about morality ? [Hint: it does exist]

I understand both 73 and 74 accept cartridge discs, the 85 is the one thn don't.
The 73 costs 3 times the LG, but this one has no cartridge support.
About the 74 I have no price refs but the differences are in the other formats speeds
-/+ go from 8 to 16x, besides a rep I saw indicated 8x as doing well what may mean that 16x is not as effective as that.
The prob is Panasonic marketing policy, that only puts the drives as OEM in minimum lots of 500 in Europe, so not easy to find them and helping prices be even higher, what's a shame....

Nope, the SW-9585 is designed and manufactured by Panasonic. Check the first page of the review.
The drive uses a PANASONIC chipset and is manufactured in Indonesia.

Excellent review guys. Thanks for bringing it to us. Also thanks for showing the slower burn speed scans.

Ouch, I think Panasonic has a lot of work to do. Also it's time they threw out ZCLV burning and added quality scanning...

The new BenQ DQ60 and the TEAC DV-W516E both use the same Panasonic chipset!
These drives can both burn at 16x using CAV, so it should be possible on this Panasonic made unit! (write quality still needs help though!)
BenQ DQ60 also supports quality scanning! So this should be possible on the Panasonic drive as well.
Question is whether or not Panasonic developers will put any effort into improving the drive (I doubt it).
The "latest" firmware we have is dated from March this year!

You know, depsite these problems at 16x, lack of bitsetting, and so on, after looking over all the drives at my local Fry's yesterday, this still seems like the best one to get from their stock (but I actually hope I'm mistaken).

And for what its worth, I was in just such a position two months ago - I NEEDED a drive that day and I was at Fry's (and this was a secondary machine as well), so I bought it.

I've never had any problems with it, and have burned at least 50 data DVDs and about 25 video DVDs (from captures from an analog capture board hooked into my dishnetwork box). Apparently, I've lucked out and used nothing but 8X DVD +Rs (TDK Printables from Costco, should anyone care) and I've never gotten a coaster.

But back to the original statement: if there's a better drive fron Fry's on-shelf stock, I'd love to hear the recomendation.

@fatfeel, very interesting. I have no idea where they obtained BZ0H (dated 08/03/05), but I can see that it is much newer than the firmware that Hammer Storage provided.

@wernst, It's good to hear that you have not had any problems.
I would suggest that you continue to burn at 8x with this drive.
Regarding your Fry's Electronics "best drive" question, I would probably recommend a Pioneer or the SONY 810A from their limited selection of drives.

Thanks! Nice to see a Panasonic drive review, finally.

The retail package is jam-packed with the Panasonic (MATSHITA) drive, cables, instructions, software, one Verbatim 16x DVD+R disc and one Panasonic 3x DVD-RAM disc. This is indeed a much nicer retail package than the competition provides.
Better be forwarded to LG and Hitachi?

My firmware is B100.
Thanks.

I am recieving this error message (using AnyDVD 5.5.5.1):
Quote:
3. Your drive is region locked RPC2 drive, which does not allow reading of scrambled sectors from a different region and y ou try to read aDVD from a different region. Known drives having this problme are RICOH/PHILIPS DVD writers and Matshita/Panasonic DVD readers and writers.
You can try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com

4. Your drie is an RPC2 drive that has not y et been assigned a region. Try to assign one, or try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com
Can someone explain to me how to assign a region? When I use AnyDVD to view drive information it tells me:

Quote:
Summary for drive F: (AnyDVD 5.5.5.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 0
Or does anyone know which, if either, of the three firmware patches on www.rpc1.com will help me with my little problem?

Thanks!

Due to numerous requests via PM, I have hosted the B101 firmware for cdfreaks members.
You can download it here:
http://download.cdfreaks.com/download/131

Also please note that I have emailed Panasonic USA, Panasonic USA support and Panasonic Japan. All of these parties refused to provide the newest BZ0H firmware.
Hardwarezone.com also refused to provide any information regarding firmware BZ0H.

Hate to burst your bubble there mate, but my older Made In Japan Panasonic LF-M621 (SW-9572) handles scratched DVDs/CDs better than any drive I've used in my life. I currently also use a Pioneer 107D and Benq DW1620 DVD drive and they both stop at the same points on several mistreated CDs/DVDs that the Panasonic slices through. Honestly, this was a surprise to me, since I bought the drive only for DVD-RAM. I've heard others say their (usually older) Panasonic drives are great at reading scratched discs too. The high tolerance to mistreated discs and extracting flawlessly with C2 error correction makes this my favourite drive for ripping audio in EAC, too.

At least for my money, this has been the best drive I've ever bought (quite apart from the DVD-RAM cartridge support and excellent build quality). No experience with these new drives, but I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss them. Sometimes you actually DO get what you pay for.

I bought this model, SW-9585 last Dec'05 and its only now I got to install it. However as much the successs the other people had got... I am exactly the opposite. I know the drive works because its able to read CDs/DVDs but it does not allow me to burn anything CDs nor DVDs. I read about the firmware upgrade but I am also not getting any luck when updating to B101. Is there a trick to it as I am getting a message "down load Nogood" when I am trying to upgrade. Please help!

Thanks!

Helo everyone-

I just joined here, but I have come here as a guest a lot in the past

I just boughtthis DVD Burner for $30 after rebate at fry's, and now I read the review for it. Will it be OK if I burn DVD-Rs ar 8x? the review says it doesnt do wel at 16x.

I bough this drive because of the price, I am frustrated with my luck with optical drives..since 2000 I have had 6 drives burn out on me (1 CD burner, 3 DVD drives, and 2 DVD burners, one a TDK the other a Plextor, needles to say, I am disappointed that my plextor burner burned out in less than 1.5 years). So this time I wen solel on price.

Does this burner have some sort of problem when used with DVD Decrypter?

I used to use it all the time with my other burners and readers, but since I installed this burner, whenever I start DVD Decrypter, when it "searching for ATPAI devoces" the brings my shole system down, all programs crash and I have to manually restart my computer.

Is there any way around this or is there something wrong with my burner?
