cd/dvd burning problems

My dvd-rw drive(aopen dvd-rw dl isu 8484g) will play and disc with no problems but will not recognize a blank disc. It shows a dvd as a dvd-r in a cd drive and does not recognize a cd-r disc at all. I have upgraded the firmware and it still doesn't help. Please help have no idea what the problem is.

Try some other media (Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim are good).
If it doesn't play pressed CD either, it may be that the CD laser is defective. In this case you need a new drive.

No doesn't seem to be a media problem. I can play back cd's and dvd's with no trouble even discs recorded on other computers. I have also installed and reinstalled the drive and the problem persists. Anyone have any other ideas ?

Ran a bustrace hope this helps shed light on the problem.
