CD and DVD Writers Discuss, Burner cannot read burned DVD+-R, can write DVD+-R and read pressed DVD/CD/burned CDR at Computer Hardware forum; The burner in question here is a Mad-Dog-branded NEC 3500AG, but as this doesn't seem to be a model-specific problem (seemingly similar problems have popped up in threads but without much detail provided by the OP and thus quickly dropped unresolved) I figured it'd do better in the General forum

The burner in question here is a Mad-Dog-branded NEC 3500AG, but as this doesn't seem to be a model-specific problem (seemingly similar problems have popped up in threads but without much detail provided by the OP and thus quickly dropped unresolved) I figured it'd do better in the General forum than the NEC subforum...?

Anyway....
The system (during both the prior normal operation and current problematic operation):
  • Mad-Dog-branded NEC 3500AG
  • Windows XP with SP2
  • Biostar nForce2 mobo

The problem:
  • Burned DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs are seen by XP's Explorer as blank "CDs" with 0 used and 0 free bytes.
  • This applies to discs burned both by my burner and by other burners, to discs burned both as data DVDs and as video discs for playback on set-top DVD players, and to a variety of different media codes (which are fully readable by DVDIdentifier despite this problem).
  • The burner gives no other indication of problems reading the discs (aside from simply not reading them): no odd blinking lights, no heavy whirring, just the normal "What do you want to do with this [Blank Disc]?" XP autoplay dialogue.
  • Pressed DVDs, pressed CDs, and burned CDRs are all readable as normal.
  • Oddly enough, DVD writing seems entirely unaffected; I've burned a few DVD+Rs with Nero without incident since this problem arose.
  • All of these DVDs (including the post-problem burns) are perfectly readable on other DVD drives on other PCs, with no obvious signs (CRC errors, transfer speed hiccups, etc) of poor burn quality.
  • This problem arose recently, and a couple of possibly relevant changes might have coincided with its appearance: an upgrade to Liggy and Dee's latest 3500 firmware (2.TC), and an automatic Windows update, though...

Attempts to solve the problem:
  • I have since reverted to several prior firmwares, both by L&D and stock NEC versions to no avail or apparent effect on the problem, and....
  • The problem persists even after a clean Windows install (XP Pro with SP2 slipstreamed).
  • I have switched the burner to all different IDE channel and master-slave-single arrangments, to no effect.
  • I have tried replacing the IDE ribbon, to no effect.
  • When placed in my Gentoo Linux PC, the drive operates with all apparent normality, and reads burned DVDs without incident--which would seem to imply no hardware issue with the drive itself, but rather some problem between it, XP, and possibly my IDE controller. Thus....
  • I have installed the drive using both XP's default and nVidia's latest nForce2 IDE drivers, but to no effect.
  • I've made sure that DMA is enabled for the burner.
  • I've used forceASPI to force an ASPI layer of 4.60, to no effect.
  • I've tried to manually replace the system file atapi.sys to an older, SP1 version, due to a mention somewhere or another, to no effect.

So yes. I'm kind of at the end of what I can think of here. The only thing I've in my mind left to try is installing the drive in a different PC running XP, but that timetable belongs to my friend-with-the-different-PC-running-XP, and not me--and it won't really solve anything either way, just give a tad more info to work with. Most of the similar situations I've seen here and elsewhere concern the presence and removal of packet-writing software like Roxio or InCD--which, as I mentioned, are nowhere near the clean install I did (nor the previous install, for what it's worth...).

Thoughts?

Well, nevermind, I guess. Seems to have been a quirky power-supply issue to which the burner and nothing else were peculiarly and overly sensitive. Huh.

Hi I am having exactly same problem. My DVD is a TDK 420N 4X R/RW. Until few weeks back I was successfully able to read, write any CD,VCD or DVD. But suddenly, my DVD writer cannot read any disc. But still can write CD,VCD and DVD's. It is not able to read the CD/DVD that it just burnt.
Sometimes the windows explorer changes my Drive from DVD Rw to Cd Drive and sometimes when I click on the drive it says drive is inaccessible. Also sometimes it opens up explorer window and has 0 files and 0 bytes for any fully loaded Cd/DVD.

I don't know what to do. Read many forums.
Please explein your solution of power supply?
Any other idesa or thoughts?
Please help.
Thank you

These are software problems. They interfere with other tools and drivers, the outcome is the explained issue.

What software isues? Please explain. I have tried DVD region free software
I even took my drive to another computer. There also same problems.
After studying on few forums, I upgraded firmware to RPC 2 autoreset. So now there is no region specified.
I put CD/DVD's IN, The explorer shows empty folder for CD/DVD drive. The drive has reading problem,
But it can very well record CD's and DVd's with no problem.

I have tried lens cleaning. But it is still able to write data on empty cd, vcd as as dvd's, but not able to recognize.
I installed DVDinfo and Neroinfo. It show my drive is working properly when I insert the disc but does not play the content. And says No media present.

Chef metioned "OK, cleaning the drive/lense could help here, it should be the first step.
But if it also fails on another computer, it's probably a hardware problem after all."

Later he mentioned "This is a sign of a buggored OS installation or wicked drivers..."

I am boggled by this. I have tried updating firmware from NEC RC1 to RC2 but no sucess as far as read. Now it started to ask me to insert data disc even though ts already there. It does not even open explorer window which earlier it was showing as empty.
I tried removing lower & upperfilter again. I even installed & changed the driver type manually to CDDA accurate from the Hardware list. No success. I will try other drivers too later.

Wold guess, Could it be the magnet that spins on top of lens gone bad?
I don't know. Is there anyone that has similar problem & has fixed/saved the drive.
Thanks

If you burn a DVD and use the verify option, it will verify and you'll know that the drive can read the burned media/content.

This is a sign of an troubleing driver or software on the system.
Are the m$ IDE drivers installed?

Follow the HOW TO link in my sig...

If this really won't work you either can test the drive in another computer or install the OS newly from scratch.
