Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

Do all "stand alone" Blu-Ray players accept AVCHD movies, or is just a certain few, like Panasonic and Sony players?

Thanks.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

From what I read, there are some Blu-ray players that won't play AVCHD movies but I don't have the precise list..

I know for sure that Sony standalone and PS3 can play it without problem.

AVCHD files can be stored in various media: Memory cards (SDHC etc), harddisk, or DVD discs (as original media specified in the AVCHD standard).

Excellent - with so many, I've got to think the list of Blu-Ray players that DON'T support AVC-HD is quite tiny. Does that list exist somewhere?

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

Hello
Could you please explain to a "newbie" what a AVCHD/AVC(H.264) movie exactly is ?

I get confused with other expressions like « BDAV authoring » and « encrypted / non encryptedBDMV discs »

Thank a lot !

There is no official list, it requires research on every player to find out if it supports it. But I think it will be a safe bet to say that anything that is coming out now will support AVC-HD.

Hey guys,

I was just wondering since you all seem to have the standalone AVCHD compatible players covered, if anyone knew which PC blu-ray optical drives played AVCHD files? Specifically the GBC-H20L from LG. I haven't been able to find much documentation online about it.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

Most PC Blu-ray drives are capable of reading DVD-video or BD-MV(BD-ROM) discs, decoding them to display on your pc’s monitor requires separate MPEG, H.264 or VC-1 decoding that is done by separate hardware (either an MPEG, H.264 or VC-1 decoder card or MPEG, H.264 or VC-1 decoding done by your video card), or separate software that you install to do MPEG, H.264 or VC-1 decoding.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

The Sony S550 will not play a BD-RE I burned of an AVCHD copy of a movie converted from hd dvd. The disc plays fine in my blu ray drive in the PC. The S550 will play a BD-RE that's a direct copy of something else, so it's not the disc. I assume the PS3 will play this AVCHD movie just fine. The S550 plays about 5 seconds and freezes with no audio output. Anyone played these kinds of files on a PS3 successfully? I think I'm going to exchange the S550 for one of those.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

I still do not understand if this concept of « AVC-HD movies » refers to:

1°) Stamped commercial BDMV discs of movies using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression

2°) HD movies burned on BD-R/RE discs and using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression.
Examples:
a) the 'AVCHD format' used by the standalone blu-ray burner such as the Panasonic DMR-BW500
b) the 'BDAV format' coming out of Nero 9 and using the AVC compression

3°) Or only to HD movies burned on DVD’s using a method such as described by zevia here:
« BD2DVD: Blu-ray to DVD guide »
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f142/bd2dvd...-guide-232165/

4°) or all of these 3 as long as the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression is used
and the files structure « compliant with the Blu-ray format »

Thanks for any explanations

1, 2, 3 & 4.

Generally though - it's just High Definition video content that complies with Bluray compatible standard in terms of resolution, codecs, bitrates & container.

Once you have your AVCHD compliant Video file, you can produce BD9/BD5 or real 25/50GB Bluray discs, or even just bluray compatible file structures on a flashdisk or portable HDD and play them on a Bluray player without re-encoding/modifying the content of the Video.

Hopefully that satisfies your curiosity

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

Using profile 4.1 should be fine -> Make sure the video resolution is either 1920x1080, or 1280x720.

If the movie is the correct resolution, then you may need to use a 4.0 profile - lower profiles will still only work if you have the right resolutions & etc.

Also ensure that you set it to output a proper bluray structure, rather than just a single M2TS file.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

@platinumsword & debro

Thanks a lot to both of you fo yours answers !

If I did understand well this point:
- because some commercial pressed BD discs are using the AVC encoding for the main movie and sometimes MPEG2 for the bonus (I have seen that in shops)
- it means that not 100% of the standalone Blu-Ray on the market are able to play these peculiar commercial movies with AVC encoding

So even to be able to watch all of the commercial pressed BD discs you have to buy one of the players you have listed above.
This list covers most of the BD players on the market but not all (or not even 100% of the oncoming players ?)

Is my statement right or did I miss something ?

I don't know where you got that list but the Insignia NS-BR2DVD does not play AVCHD. Just burned them and tried it on DVD-R and it doesn't work. Called their support line, and of course, clueless.

I agree with you and after much hassle figuring out what was wrong I found a post with an explanation. It's not that my bluray player out there and many like them can't play AVCHD, it's that they can't play them in a specific format. When I use Sony's gay PMB software to burn my videos from my camcorder onto a DVD in AVCHD format my bluray player doesn't recognize the disc. What I noticed was that it is missing some folder (blank folders) and all I had to do was add them and it worked just fine. This site gives a great explanation in case anyone is interested. The only pain is that if you're using Sony's gay PMB software then you first have to burn it to a disc and then copy all the files on the disc to the hard drive add the blank folders that are missing and then reburn it using imgburn. Check this website out and it explains why few players actually play AVCHD even though they support it. All that has to be done is a few changes on the folders of the disc itself. So simple...http://www.elurauser.com/articles/avchd_to_bluray.jsp

Up and running, good to hear. I think the link you provided will prove useful to some users.

Re: Blu-Ray players that play AVC-HD movies.

I've got a Samsung BD-U5000Player and it won't recognize any BD structured (AVCHD) disc on DVD-R I've ever tried. Is it something I'm doing? Will this Sammy player ever play a homemade disc with BD structure? Will it play it if it's on a BD-RW? I hate to say it but I'm not 100% happy with the Sammy player or the Sammy plasma it feeds. I'm having this problem with the player and when I installed updated firmware that was suppose to allow the player to also play PAL DVDs then the TV wouldn't work with the PAL signal which apparently the BD-u5000 was able now to send to it??? Why is Samsung crippling these products?

Still, I would like a answer if the BD-U5000P will ever, under any circumstance, be able to play a BD structured homemade disc like the AVCHD discs??? TIA.
