Best DVD-ROM for Ripping DVD's/CD's
CD and DVD Writers Discuss, Best DVD-ROM for Ripping DVD's/CD's at Computer Hardware forum; Hi: I am building a new Windows Vista based PC and was wondering what the best DVD-Rom drive is for ripping DVD's & CD's (will be using it for gaming as well). Any thoughts / opinions? (I'll be going for an IDE DVD-ROM drive). Thanks.

It's silly to buy a -Rom these days with the price of burners as low as they are. I'd get a Liteon for that purpose, and you'll have a back-up burner if you ever need one.
I recently bought an Asus E616A2 DVD-ROM drive to use for ripping cds and DVDs, and I have been very impressed with it. It can rip a DL DVD in about 12-13 minutes (twice as fast as my Pioneer 111), it is very quiet, and it has accurately ripped discs that my other drives could not. http://www.thetechgeek.com/content/p...id=9292&cid=25

Regarding speed, many burners have riplock-removal patches, and some, like LiteOn drives, don't even have a riplock. My 20A1H ripped @16X right out of the box.

I have a LiteOn 16P1S. It's really fast, up to 16x for any kind of dvd thanks to Codeguys' utility, Omnipatcher. But (why is there always a but?) it's bad with scratched discs, as bad as my BenQ DW1650, even worse than a Plextor 130 flashed with BenQ DV1650 TAOE firmware. There is a new dvd-rom drive from Lite On, 16D1P which is supported by Omnipatcher too, but I don't know how good it is with scratches. Lite On dvd-rom drives can perform quality scans, so you could use this feature if your recorder doesn't suppor it. Newer Lite On dvd recorders can also report jitter, so their new dvd-rom drive might be able to do so too. Last edited by talos_2002; 28-04-2007 at 17:57. Reason: typos

Are you saying that, scratched discs aside, the Lite on DVD-Rom's have the best ripping performance? |
Yes.
