| Which is the best drive to do Blu Ray Quality Scans? As the title. Which drive is best to use to do a Blu Ray burn quality test? I see liteons recommended but those seem very expensive. The Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP is a lot cheaper than the iHES208/iHES108 so is that worth considering? Are these Blu Ray quality tests that some people do worth anything? I have read some people say they are not. I would like to know whether the disks I purchase are worth getting or whether another brand would be a better choice. I have purchased some relatively cheap disks with a new Pioneer BDR-206BK so I would like to know whether the burns are okay. Is there a better way than doing disk scans?

| Re: Which is the best drive to do Blu Ray Quality Scans? I've used the SH-B083L for BD-R scanning, and its error scanning results are comparable to an iHES. It has been mentioned here that the SH-B123L has similar ability. I suspect that you don't see many scans with these drives around here because many would purchase a Lite-on iHES or IHBS for scanning and ripping and avoid the rip-locked Samsung. Really a shame, as the enhanced poor-quality BD-R reading ability that Samsung claims for its drives has proven to be true for me. I have found that poor error scan results often do translate to poor playback performance in a finicky set-top player. Do remember that an OK quality scan is only half the recipe for a good BD-R. Some BD-R's have been found to go bad in under a year. You do not mention which brand BD-R that you chose?

| Re: Which is the best drive to do Blu Ray Quality Scans? Thank you for the information, that is what I needed. It's a pity that no one has managed to remove the Rip lok on the Samsung. It has been done on many other drives in the past. The Liteons are about twice the price of the Samsung drives and the build quality is meant to be better on the Samsungs. The disks are Aone. I have had bad experiences with Aone disks in the past with their DVD DL disks which gave very poor quality scans. An earlier type were meant to be okay but a later type were terrible. This was quite widely reported about.

Quite frustrating, the Samsung performs at a higher level than the iHES except as a quick ripper. What is the MID on those Aone's?

![]() Supposedly they stopped production of BD-R for a while last year to fix their process, and now their blanks should have good longevity though this is all third hand information I read online.

. I would be more inclined to feel reassured if Ritek mentioned the results of accelerated aging tests on their media. Wonder why they haven't gotten around to that ?I've only seen two manufacturers that are willing to advertise the results of those tests. I'm finding that increasingly bothersome and thinking I'd like to avoid a yearly re-burn cycle, if I can ![]()

The reviews on the site that I purchased them say they are okay but saying they are okay and them being decent quality are different things. Having the burns last are another thing. It will be interesting what speed the Pioneer 206 will burn them at as they are x4 speed disks. It's a chinese made drive rather than one from Japan.

Here's hoping that your batch of discs is one of the decent ones .My own experience with Philips is with Vinpower and Optical Quantum branded discs. I am rather hesitant to purchase any more of these. Here is an average burn out of three 10 disc spindles . Several burns were not readable.

Not one coaster after 10 burns. I would look into your burner and or the PC you're trying to get positive results from. J

As I said, results I have seen from others have been mixed, and it certainly appears that at least one manufacturing plant is/was producing decent Philips MID BD-R's. I truly was not attempting to paint all discs with this MID with a wide brush. Merely advising caution. Is that spindle "Philips" branded media? I wish I knew, Pepst. No COO on the spindles. Do you know which brands are currently coming from the Netherlands?

At the very least they are inject printable so have some protection from marker pens. I always disliked inkjet printable disks but now knowing they offer some protection from inks in marker pens my dislike for them is less. Quote:
The transfer rates tests look okay and don't have the problems that you seem to of had. I have had to do these with my Pioneer BDR-206 as I have no other Blu Ray capable drive. The reliability of the disks is a concern as I had planned to use Blu Ray as a backup method because of the larger capacity. These Aone disks cost around £8 for 10 and can be purchased for as little as £7.39. What is the riplock speed set at on your Samsung? The samsung drive costs a lot less than the Liteons, the Liteon drives approach close to what my Pioneer writer cost me and I don't want to be shelling out again just for scanning. However the Ripping option might be used at some point in the future but it's a lot extra to pay out. Samsung SH-B123L £42.99 LiteOn iHES208 £87.69 LiteOn iHBS112 £79.99 but this is also a writer Pioneer BDR-206DBK £103.12 The drive I have So you can see there is a very big difference in prices. So what are the Ripping speeds of the Liteon drives compared with the Samsung before and after riplock is removed?

| I've burned a fair number (~45) of the Optical Quantum 4x discs (Philips made). All of the ones that have burned successfully (43 of 45) passed a verify and I didn't notice any slowdowns during the verify. I should point out that the burning was done in a system that's in another room away from me, so I wasn't exactly keeping a close on it. Two out of those 45 generated errors during the burn and become coasters. The Memorex 4x (Ritek made) discs similarly had 1 out of 30 that generated an error on burn the other 29 passed a verify with no observed slowdowns. The Merax 4x discs (Optodisc made) have all burned successfully with no observed slowdowns on verify. That's 10 so far though I had 1 of the 10 fail a verify with some sort of dime sized discoloration spot inside the disc on the recordable layer. The Verbatim 4x (non LTH) discs I have so far are 100% for burn success and verify success, but I've burned less of them at 16 discs. I am trying some speed tests of some of the Optical Quantum discs to see if I simply missed the troubles reading the discs the first time around and will report back later. |

| Re: Which is the best drive to do Blu Ray Quality Scans? My Aone printable disks have K03211 BD-R 25GB which can be viewed on the bottom of the disk. It's in reverse so would of been viewable if the inkjet print layer wasn't there. I don't know whether this has any meaning or whether it is an identifying mark. It's all that is on them.

| I picked 6 discs at Random. 3 from the first spindle of 25pk and 3 from the 2nd and 3rd spindles of 10 (each). They all read back at full speed. |

. Riplock is not a factor at all with data BD-R's. IF the 123 has any riplock issues with BD video you can simply use the 206 for video ripping. Given the prices you posted, either the SH-B123L or iHBS112 would certainly be your best choices.Quote:
