hy,
you can use any dvd - r (ps2 can only read -r) media when your ps2 is modified with a mod chip like ice from www.mauzi.de , but i´ve never tried to play a dvd - movie backup on a not modified ps2.
for backups of ps2 game you need in any case a modchip or swaptrick.

Thanks for the reply, what i mean is though on an unmodded ps2, i found this guide ........
This site is all about showing you to the best I can on how to backup your DVD films, to prevent them from getting ruined. Due to new software being available, there are a couple of ways in which you can do a backup, so just follow the links below to get started.
If you use disc's that are at least Gen 4 and will burn at 2 speed, then, these backups will work in your PS2's even if it is unmodified. Please note, If you have 4x disc and use the Pioneer AO3 or AO4, you will need to get the firmware upgrades.
............ so my question is what are the media that are most likely to work? I have looked at the compatibility guide but this has not helped as its for PC's and stand alone dvd players... Thanks, David -

My son's ps2 has played every DVD-R backup I have put in it. I tend to use these three programs:
1. DVD43 - On the fly decrytor like Anydvd, but freeware.
2. Nero Recode 2 or DVDShrink 3.1.3 - One's Commercial and the other free but based on the same code!
3. DVDDecrypter - Great for single layer DVD's, can rip and burn in ISO mode very well and it is freeware.
I have not tried a +R disc yet but I will soon.
