In August of 2011, I installed a Samsung SH-S222A Dvd reader/writer. Although it worked for some time, this drive now fails like the previous drive; i.e., it'll read any DVD I install, but won't write to any: +R, -R or +RW. If I right-click on drive letter with a writeable disk installed, 'format' isn't even listed as an option.
I have Win XP.
Device Manager lists device as: "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222A"
I've tried the "Microsoft Fixit.dvd" tool, it reports "the drive isn't capable of writing;" complains that "class & device filter drivers are corrupt."
I've removed the device from "Device Manager" and removed the "upper" and "lower" filters from the registry to no avail.
I'm convinced (this could be my major downfall) that I have a sftwr. problem; but can't find a way out.
I'd appreciate any and all help!

Hi and Welcome!
Windows XP does not natively support DVD writing, so you must have installed 3rd party software for that job. Which one?
What happens if you use DVD burning software like Neró, Imgburn, CDburnerXP (just to name a few)?
At least Neró and Imgburn provide logfiles that are helpful for troubleshooting.

Hey, I love learning new things... I didn't know WinXP didn't support DVD writing (I thought I was using "Sonic" just because it was easier to use--or had prettier screens!)
At any rate, ya got me thinkin, so I tried burning an audio CD with realPlayer--it worked. Granted, that's a CD, not DVD, but I think you're on to somethin' here, so I'm gonna download imgBurn, and try that. (I had initially dismissed imgBurn, as I was afraid it only burned images).
I'll let ya know my findings. Thanks! -

I installed ImgBurn, and it burns DVDs. But it seems to 'finalize' the DVD after writing.
I need to be able to append files to the DVD until I want to finalize it. Is that possible with ImgBurn, or would I be better off using Nero BurnLite?
Thanks again

That's fine. And the finalizing is a feature of Imgburn.Quote:I installed ImgBurn, and it burns DVDs. But it seems to 'finalize' the DVD after writing.
ImgBurn does not support Multisession. Perhaps not a bad idea since multisession is often causing trouble.Quote:I need to be able to append files to the DVD until I want to finalize it. Is that possible with ImgBurn, or would I be better off using Nero BurnLite?
So, if you insist on multisession, you need other software. I don't know if Neró Lite supports the multisession feature, so you have to find out yourself.
