I have a Samsung SW216B CD-RW on my PC (NT4.0) and updated the firmware to Q0002 to try to see if it would become more reliable. I used Samsung's ODD Firmware LiveUpdate software to select and install the firmware and it seemed to flash without problems. Or so I thought: I can still read CDs in the drive but when I try to write CDs Easy CD Creator tells me that it cannot detect a CD-RW drive on my pc. I have reinstalled EasyCDcreator and updated it from 4.02 to 4.05 but with no change. Any ideas what I can do to make it work again? Thanks very much, Simon

First, make sure that the firmware update didn't change the drive string. The drive should be recognized by NT4.0 as a "Samsung CD-R/RW SW-216B". If for some reason the drive string has changed, it may not be recognized unless the registry is edited. Easy CD Creator from 4.02 up is not supposed to need the standard ASPI drivers, but I would install them anyway. Go to ASPI drivers version 4.70 to get the latest Adaptec drivers and the ASPI check utility. Run ASPICHK first to check the status of the ASPI installation. Then install the update to v4.70 and reboot. Run ASPICHK to confirm a correct installation. If the drive is then recognized, you are done. If the drive is still not recognized, I would do a clean uninstall and reinstall. Go to How to cleanly uninstall and reinstalling Easy CD Creator 4 and follow the instructions exactly. The software must be updated to v4.05 for your burner to be recognized. Get the correct update at Easy CD Creator 4.x Software Updates

thanks very much for the suggestions. I decided to go for the full treatment in one go - physical disconnection and reconnection of the drive; re-flashing of the firmware; updating the ASPI layer; clean removal of EasyCDcreator; complete reinstallation of EasyCDcreator. Not a very scientific approach but it worked. The drive is talking to the software and I've even managed to burn a couple of CDs. Great news. Thanks again.
