Burning Software Discuss, CDBurnerXP and "the .NET framework" at Software forum; I'm looking for a free CD-(and maybe DVD) burning programme that does all the basics, but isn't too bloated or complicated. I'm looking for a free CD-(and maybe DVD) burning programme that does all the basics, but isn't too bloated or complicated.

I looked at Burrrn - which I know is essentially for audio CDs. It "supports" .wav and .mp3. But can it create mp3 data discs (for an mp3 compatible car stereo) or does it in effect convert mp3s back into an audio format when burning?

I was about to download CDBurnerXP, which looked ideal. But then I read the rather defensive warning on the website which said that the Microsoft .NET framework had to be installed too (and it acknowledged that some people didn't like .NET). I have no idea what it is... but I am wary of Mr Gates' clever and intrusive applications so I'm instinctively reluctant. And does CDBurnerXP do CD Text - which is something I do want?

That left DeepBurner as the only other option on my current shortlist. Any comments on DeepBurner (pros and cons)? Or can anyone suggest other programs to consider?

Put this way when you do a windows update or download the updates you will be require to get the latest version of .net framework....cause that just how its going to be...if you want a stable system...I even got now 3.5 on my system....eventually you will have to get updated .net framework it's just a matter of time....

Hmm. Not sure I quite grasp your message, coolcolors. Is the .NET framework a good or a bad thing? Useful, or tiresome? Necessary, or not? Is there any downside to installing it?

No. Burrrn only does CDDA.

Thanks Michael. So Burrrn plus Imgburn is really all you need?!

Can Burrrn do straight audio-disc-to-audio-disc copying? And what about CD-Text? Subject to those points, I might give them both a try...

When ImgBurn 2.4.x comes out, it will support audio cd's too... and it looks like CD-TEXT will be supported as well (see this link from the ImgBurn Guides forum). I know I am looking forward to this.

Personally, I think DeepBurner is rubbish... I think the last time it was updated IBM OS/2 Warp was a thriving operating system (just kidding/exaggerating on that)...

Thanks, SithTracy - it will be interesting to see if this version of ImgBurn becomes in effect the do-it-all. Any clues as to when it might be available, I wonder?

Comment (positive or critical) on DeepBurner is helpful. I'm still agnostic/undecided. Does it deliver? Older programs can still be worthwhile if they are proven, well-tested and reliable. I'd rather have a well-tried old 'un that works smoothly than a fancy new one with bells and whistles that hogs resources and is less stable!

What works great? You have ImgBurn 2.4.xx? Where did you get it from?
