Which app best for creating Audio CDs from MP3 files?

Hi all,

I'm interested in your opinions about the best software to use for creating audio cds from mp3 files on the HD.

My PC came with EasyCD Creator 5 and when it worked it was great for this - simple, intuitive etc etc. The problem was when it didn't...

I've just re-formatted and re-installed XP home and am wondering what the options are. To be honest I'm not really up to speed on the alternatives to Roxio.

I don't have a dvd, not interested in video stuff and use A120% for 1:1 copying - I'm just looking for the best s/w for making audio cds.

What do you all recommend?

All I have for burning apps is clonecd, nero, winoncd, and considering discjuggler. Nero and WinOnCD I find best for making audio cd's out of mp3 files. WinOnCD has extra editing features and I prefer it somewhat over Nero.

Hopefully you have not reloaded Roxio( Ezcd Creator). If you have I would reformat. I have Nero and Feurio! installed. The two are compatible and Feurio! CD Manager will test the mp3's as it converts them to wave files and report if a file has missing sectors etc. and let you know what effect it will have on audible sound quality if you decide to use the file anyway.

It's the only one I know that scans the MP3 files searching for defective frames, and it has the best burning engine (MP3 on the fly or not - it's better programmed in the end).
Nero cuts the file sometimes when it finds errors in MP3. It also hasn't the pause options that Feurio has, so, in the strange case you have a MP3 with no silence in the end, Nero will cut the last bits of music. The only advantage of Nero could be the RMS normalization filter (it's probably better than the peaks-normalization of Feurio, but I haven't tried it)

You should search the Audio forum...

I'm using Nero Burning ROM to create my Audio CD's from both MPC and MP3. I don't know if its the best but I like it

Hmm,

senior admin, senior members and die hards - from Philambers last reply (great avatar) would I be right in thinking there is a long running battle of opinions here?

To make life easyer, I'm looking for something:
Reliable
Easy to use
*Which allows me to edit the silence between tracks
*Which can balance out the volume so all tracks have the same level
Preferably drag&drop from music folders in one pane to CD project in another (like Roxio...)
Any other features you all think I've forgotten...

He didn't say Nero was better than Feurio!

And I don't mind saying that RMS normalization in Nero could be a nice feature not available in Feurio... (I haven't tried it).

Its Track Editor is the fastest, and you only have to use the "Set start/end position" to point the start or end of tracks.
With Nero and most other programs you can't do it reliably. They haven't options to allow seamless music if the tracks aren't extracted from CD.

Nero has RMS normalization.
Feurio has normalization based on peaks if you want to do it automatically ("Adjust Amplitude" in Track Editor), and very nice manual volume settings in Wave Player also (I do it manually).

Yes, "Hard Disk" tab in Copy Source or drag and drop from windows explorer.

¿Freeware? Probably BAO, I guess.

Does Nero open Cue sheets based on MP3?
With Feurio you can hear and edit comfortably those CUE images.

Ah, btw

I'm just looking for a one button option which will guarantee that all the tracks I record from the different mp3s play at the same volume on my walkman. I'm not an audio fanatic, just tired of getting my eardrums burst when I least expect it...

i'm with boskin and minix. i have used feurio for all my mp3 to audio burning for a long time. i have heard from some excellent sources though that burnatonce actually has a better audio engine. i haven't had a chance to check it out yet but i don't think you can go wrong with either.

feurio does have a lot more tools available and is built from the ground up to do only audio. besides that, it's shareware and not time-limited or crippled in any way.

Ok. I consider Feurio as the winner in the category, although i have not tried burnatonce. The only problem is that Feurio does not support my CD burner! I have tried the Feurio manager and its sweet!. I wanna ask the more knowledgeable -- if i cant use Feurio what is my other choice for best quality AudioCDs. Is it burnatonce? Also, I know I should not really mention but acoustica mp3 cd burner has some detection if there is something wrong with particular mp3 files, while turning them into wavs...

Burnatonce uses the MAD MP3 decoder to convert to .wav. You should try it. It's my fave.

If I understand correctly what you want is something that is simple to use, reliable, and has a volume equalizing feature for the burned disk. you might try Acoustica MP3 burner it fits all the above. I dont download or burn MP3's myself but my wife does and being a computer illiterate she has no problem burning good Cd's with acoustica.

I agree with iss, been using Acoustic MP3 for over a year now. Its the best. I also use Audiocatalyst for ripping mp3's(from cd's), even though most people like Exact Audio Copy. AudioCatalyst has no bugs, and also does a checksum to compare what it ripped off the cd(latest version Xing made free). But it does require ASPI. Of course all the last posts and this one are suggestive of first creating an mp3/wav file on thehdd and then burning it. To create and burn on the fly I guess Nero is great for that.

What do you mean with audio engine?

I did some tests in a K6-333 last weekend.

Decoding MP3 to WAV:
Nero decodes at 4x.
BAO decodes at 6,2x. (BAO can't decode on the fly, AFAIK)
Feurio decodes at 8,5x.

This test was done to hard disk, and Nero doesn't access to the HDD in a logical way. Maybe the performance is better when burning, but it shows there are quite bad programmers at Ahead.

I simulated burning at 4x with a Teac 4x SCSI:
Feurio: 4~6% CPU load - very nice policy to access disk, smooth reading (animated icon was disabled)
Nero: 10~12% CPU load - many more accesses to disk. (Buffer underrun the first time I tried!)
BAO: 50% CPU load - seems robust anyway.

BAO and Nero support a lot of formats that Feurio don't support. Feurio lacks the filters that Nero has. If you don't need that, Feurio is better.

when i referred to the audio engine being better (reportedly) i meant in terms of quality and not speed. i honestly can't comment personally because i haven't tried the audio with bao yet. i use feurio and eac currently but i intend to test bao the next time i need to burn audio.
