For those of you interested in getting a major discount on Windows 7, Microsoft is going to offer the Home Premium Upgrade and Professional Upgrade versions for $49 and $99 respectively. This is a pre-order, not an early purchase with delivery before the official release date.

They will be available starting tomorrow, June 26th. You can see the announcement here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...pre-order.aspx

I'm pretty sure the offer only applies to the US.

You can order through Best Buy, Amazon or online at the Microsoft Store.

little bit more info here.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News...x?NewsId=25576

Europeans will be punished for, European Union actions.

Quote:
Microsoft will not offer upgrade versions to customers in Europe, forcing them to do clean installs. While customers elsewhere in the world will be able to run a simple upgrade install, preserving their data, settings and programs, Europeans will have to make manual backups and reinstall software after installing the new OS.

Doesn't look like there is a pre-order option for W7 Ultimate. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

By the way, if you are a member at Ars Techinica, they are giving away 100 coupons for 50% off the pre-order price from the Microsoft store. If you are interested, look at this thread over at Ars: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...es-us-only.ars

Does anyone know if you will be able to do a "clean" install just by inserting a previous version install disc during setup?

nope, it will be like vista. meaning previous OS has to be already installed.

It was possible to do a clean install with upgrade versions of Vista. See here: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...rade_clean.asp

Don't know if that will hold true for Win7.

not excactly what i would call clean install. Basically what i said still rings true. You need a OS already installed to perform the upgrade.

Yes, with the upgrade disk you need an operating system, but not necessarily an earlier one. By re-installing Vista over itself, it should have fewer headaches/glitches than installing over XP. But it still takes twice as long to complete the process.

And that's a nice find scotton. No Microcenters anywhere near me though.

some might find this interesting as well

http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/0...nt-till-july-3

Quote:
We've just received word that Microsoft has begun offering a discount on its Technet subscription. With Windows 7 coming out in October, this is a great time to sign up. Under this discount program, you can get a one year subscription for $249, a $100 discount below the normal price. While more expensive than most upgrade versions of Windows 7, it does offer users the full-versions of any SKU as well as many other Microsoft programs. Also, it is expected that these users will get Windows 7 before the general public in October.

Interested users can visit the following link and enter the promo code "TEYFY09" to get the discount. The offer is set to expire on July 3.

Update: We've just been notified that UK users can enter the promo code "TNCARE09" to get the same discount (£187.37 instead of £234.21) -- We'd also like to point out that Technet subscriptions are for testing purposes only and not designed for general retail or commercial use. Please be sure to read all Microsoft provided licencing documentation to be sure the use of this subscription is done in a legal and ethical way.

Windows7 is huge! System requirements shows it needs 16GB disk space, and it may grow much larger. I installed WinXP that used less than 3GB but grew to nearly 7GB over the years as apps and updates were added. Costco is also selling Win7 upgrade at $45 and $95 for Home Premium and Professional version for pre-orders by 7/11 at http://www.costco.com/Common/Search....eOrderWindows7.

I'd read in another forum that only Visa and WinXP qualify for upgrade offer, but I noticed too the second link of OP's initial post says Windows 2000 qualifies too. Some must have gotten bad info. FYI the Microcenter link in post #10 doesn't work.

I found the working Microcenter link on Bensbargains which is http://microcenter.com/storefronts/m.../preorder.html, but it's in store only. The Microcenter nearest me is over 50 miles away which makes this not a good deal except for those reasonably close to a Microcenter.

I've read here and there that maybe the European upgrade version of Windows7 might be used for a clean install, but it could be just rumors.

that is wrong, because there will be NO European upgrade version.

LOL, I wouldn't expect any Europeans to lose any sleep over it

Besides, I personally always do clean installs, and I believe that most people prefer it also if possible over an update.

Personally, I would prefer the "full" version to the "upgrade" version, so I think those across the pond have it pretty well off, especially since you are getting the full version at the upgrade cost.

I subscribed to this post hoping soon they will show a pre-order offer for the Ultimate edition. I bought the Vista Ultimate edition (not worth it) and probably won't be worth it but i just like to have it in case they bring something extra that's worthy to have.

It looks like you can pre-order the upgrade version of Win7 Ultimate from the Microsoft Store, but there is no discount applied to it at the moment, and may never be one.
http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft...7/category/102
Certainly not a great buy at that price.

Reading at the MS site it says you can do a clean install with the upgrade discs.

219.00 is a little high for the upgrade; wonder what the OEM pricing will be?

I just pre-ordered Windows 7 for $0.00, Plus $10.00 shipping and handling. This is part of the limited time offer and certain companies (Tigerdirect.com) that sold me Vista is participating. I had to give them the Product Key and mail them a copy of the receipt (which Tigerdirect.com e-mailed me) I will get a disc and have to do a clean install.

the website for the instructions is:

www.windows.com/upgradeoffers or

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy...s/upgrade.aspx

Why pay half price when you may be able to get it for next to nothing.

If Europeans are getting the full version for the upgrade price as suggeste in post #18, what kind of punishment is that? Sounds like the European union actions are being rewarded, and the the Europeans are getting a better deal than those in the US.

For me personally I plan using WiXP as long as it does all I need because both Vista and Win7 take far too much space and use much too much memory to suit me. By the time WinXP is no longer able to do all I need there'll probably be a new Windows version, and I'll upgrade then.
