Please keep in mind that crossflashing will make your warranty null and void and that the firmware budzos is loading is tweaked for advanced users. If you're a beginner at this then I would stick with only loading the "BT" or bitsetting firmware, which only adds a very minor change that allows bitsetting on DVD+R SL and DVD+RW SL media (the drive already does DVD+R DL by default).

If you destroy your drive or it doesn't burn like you expect, don't come crying to us.

In my opinion, the firmware included with the drive is perfect, and no crossflashing is needed. All I'm waiting for is for Liggy to create a 1.60bt version of the drive's firmware.

Thanks for your advice - I will wait a while before crossflashing this drive (as you stated it doesn't need crossflashing).

Did someone say the 20x is the last of a good lineage (chipset) and the 22x is an all together different animal that's not as good as the 20x?

There are several threads in the NEC forum discussing the fact that:

    1. NEC has sold it's stake in Optiarc, and now the company is 100% owned by Sony.

    2. The new AD-7220x drives appear to be rebadged Lite-Ons, and not based on an NEC chipset.

    3. Whether Optiarc or NEC decide to ever produce another genuine NEC chipset drive is anyone's guess, so you should buy an extra AD-7200x drive now, just in case they don't. Don't get caught off guard like many did with Plextor and BenQ.

Since Pioneer drives were made with NEC chipset, does the statement "Whether Optiarc or NEC decide to ever produce another genuine NEC chipset drive is anyone's guess..." mean Pioneer drives will be made with some other chipset? Do you know what chipset for future Pioneer drives if it's not NEC chipset?

That's a discussion for the Pioneer forum. No one has any idea, yet.

Get one in-store. See if they will accept an OfficeMax coupon, and you've got it for $14.99. I have two actual OfficeMax $10off$20 coupon cards, but since we also have the printable $10off$20, I may use the actual cards at Staples, since they have a better chance of being accepted as competitor coupons than the printable one.

BTW, I cross-flashed my OEM 7200A with the retail V204A firmware, and it worked. So, it's definitely confirmed that these are AD-7200A drives.

I went by two Staples around B'ham, Al, yesterday and they were willing to match the price on their website but wouldn't let me use the Office Max coupon with the purchase, but I ended up buying one anyway @ $24.99. I've since crossed it to an AD-7200A with 1.09bt firmware from Liggy's & Dee's and it turned out very well.

    Here's a scan of a burn I did of a Yuden000 T02 @ 12x after the flash.

The only Staples near my relative's hometown had about 5-6 of these drives in stock. It rang up at $69.99, but the assistant manager was able to match online's price of $24.99 AND take OM's coupon, so total was $16ish after tax. Tempted to try again tomorrow as it's the last day for the coupon.

I picked up one of these at Staples, where is the flash that you talked about and how do you flash it? I know this is a newbie question, but I thought I might get an answer here sooner.

    Thanks

There's no need to flash the drive. Leave it alone and just use it.

Our discussion of cross-flashing is for geek/nerd curiosity only. Newbies should use the drive as it is. Cross-flashing will void your warranty, which you don't want to do. Just use the drive as it is and be happy.

Just got the last DRU-V204a off my local Staples shelf. Tagged $39.99 [clearance] but they happily matched the $24.99 web price. If your local store is out you can order online and they'll do the "ship to store" for free.

Quick Q for those who've bought them retail packaged: Was the drive itself in a plastic bag or just "bare" in the cardboard spacers? Get mine home and looks like the package had been opened and re-taped, plus there were some light scratches down the side making me thing someone had installed then returned it. Powers up and reports the factory 1.60 firmware, so apparently no "brick and return" monkey business. Can't test DVD burn capabilities just yet as my only desktop is a dinosaur and too s-l-o-w to do DVDs.

Now I just need a good external enclosure to use it with my lappy.

When I bought mine at Staples it was in a pink plastic bag inside the box.

Thanks... I picked up another one from a different store and upon opening it could tell immediately the first one was indeed a used return. Drive wasn't bagged, had scratches from mounting, manual and software weren't bagged either. Also found a greasy fingerprint in the box that told me the original owner was eating pizza while unpacking it. It's going back....

This drive is now on clearance for $15.50 at Staples B&M. I picked up NINE of them.

Happy to hear that this is a decent drive, after reading the reviews of the AD-7200A drive.
