The 5400 RPM would maybe be ok for an external back up drive but IMO it
is just too slow for any thing else.

It would be fine just for storage, internal or external. I prefer 5400 drives for storage (music, movies, pics, etc.) because lower spindle speed = less heat = less chance for failure. I've never had a 5400 rpm 3.5 inch drive fail.
