Which models (Philips and Benq)? Newegg still has the Phlips PHM-165P6S retail for 31.99 with free shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827248002

(I should really block newegg - i've already got about 12 DVD burners to split among 3 desktop PCs, and the laptop I use already has an NEC6500)

Whoa...that looks like a Litey. Eveything except the first letter indicates a SHM-165P6S.

Looks like you're right.

Also, looking at the newegg pictures, the back of the 2 drives looks identical. The top looks the same from what I can see, but I've never seen a rebadge with a front bezel so different than the LiteOn version...

post in another thread says if there UDMA Mode 4 / Lite-on
BenQ does not support UDMA Mode 4

And the spec's state udma 4

You may still find a Sony 810 at your local Office depot for $29
their BenQ 1650's I got 2 a week or so ago and got $20 rebates on them

Lite-On with UDMA-4 is a very good buy if you get your MIR without hassle.

I wouldn't be surprised to find Lite-on in Philip box since Lite-On took over ODD production from BenQ. Only one way left of getting BenQ drive is buying Hi-Val, but high chance of getting 1670. the safest chance is the CompUSA Norwood drive, the drive model states clearly on the outside of the box so you might even have a chance to land on the legendary 1640, but you should be happy to even get the 1650

I agree the Norwood & HI-VAL are still the best chance to getting BenQ drive.

Why is the 1640 preferrable to the 1650 and why is the 1670 undesireable?

Thanks

Nothing concrete about this drive just different people choice and experiences tend to favor one drive over another one. Read the threads on BenQ forum you might get some idea how the members draw their own conclusion about the drives.
