Now $21.99 w/free shipping and no need for a coupon code.

I hear reports that some people are now receiving MediaTek drives for this model, but there are no guarantees.

Yes I can confirm that the one I received is a mediatek aka true liteon drive.
I wish I had some results to post but not at the moment.

Yes got one last week when they were 19.99.
I also recieved a real liteon/ the "A" version

However, the burns on MkM001 and MCC004 aren't as good as they are on my Optiarc AD-7200S. Especially when you hit the second layer on the MKM001....

but I've been using it as a scanner with CD speed 4.7.7.6 SE.

I have attached an scan of an Xbox 360 backup and a single layer burn (both on burned on my ihas124). as you can see they arent horrible burns, but the DL burn is no where near optiarc quality.

however for 20 something bucks and the ability to scan with an mtk chipset and detect jitter... I'd say its a good buy

Great deal for $20. If I could know for sure that I would get a MediaTek, then I might have bought this, but instead I went for the ASUS DRW-B1LT.

$22.99 - $18.99 = $4, not $5.

At least one person reported getting a NEC drive not worth the chance to me.
I'll just stick with buying the ASUS DRW-B1LT drives that way I know for sure
what I'll be getting.

Re: Lite-On iHAS124-04 - $21.99 - Free Shipping - NewEgg

I purchased the iHAS124-04 from newegg this week and received a "B" model which is MTK chipset. Just wanted to let everyone know that they are not just NEC clones anymore. All three were "B" model with a manufacture date of April 2010.

Now that Newegg has the 524 (iHAS524-T98A), which from the SATA connectors looks like a true Liteon with MTK chipset, is it worth buying the Asus and crossflashing, or just buy the (more expensive) 524 and be done with it?

The iHAS124-04 B is a true liteon with a MTK chipset and is 19.99 with free shipping. I guess if you need the additional features then purchase the asus or 524. I purchased three of these drives on the 25th of july and received "B" models. When I purchased these drives I was hoping to get the "Y" model which is the NEC chipset.

If I want to do plain-vanilla quality of DL DVD scanning with CDSPEED, is the iHAS124-04 B good enough?

By the way, the 524 is with free shipping today (July 30) at Newegg, so it costs twenty-six bucks.

Re: Lite-On iHAS124-04 - $21.99 - Free Shipping - NewEgg

I would just purchase the 524 since it is only 6 dollars difference. The problem with purchasing the 124 is there is a chance you could end up with a NEC drive and not have a good scanner. here is what each models features are.

124=basic drive
224=lightscribe
324=smarterase
424=lightscribe+smarterase
524=labeltag+smarterase

Thank you very much. The Liteons are so sonfusing, even with true ones, and when the are rebadged NECs, it gets beyond confusing.

is the "B" version a better burner or just a better scanner?
