Yeah.

All things considered (compression ratio, compatibility, encoding speed, decoding CPU usage, error robustnes…) FLAC is very good. Monkey's Audio will give you a slightly better compression ratio than FLAC, but corruptions in a Monkey's Audio file can render the entire file unplayable. (Very poor error robustness.)

How does WMA lossless fit into the scheme? I like its compatability w/ a wide range of programs.

SHORTEN (SHN) is also a very common lossless codec...

stay away from proprietary lossless codecs like WMA lossless, Apple lossless and the new Sony ATRAC lossless...instead use open-sourced and/or non-commercial ones for future-proofability and higher compatibility...

good comparison on most all lossless codecs here:
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index....ess_comparison

and based on that info...WavPack seems to be the most feature-rich codec...

Cool, thanks. With all the various sources out there, this site really does provide something unique to the world that the bigger sites can't compete with. Plus it's a lot less flamey than some of the bigger audiophile sites.

Personally I like FLAC, never had a single error, and the files are allways exactly the same size as the the orignal once compressed>decompressed using the FLAC frontend. Not tried it yet, but apparently it works very well with EAC.

WavPack is the way to go.

Only downside is it lacks much hardware compatibility

WavPack is compatible w/ your portable player if you use the Open Source RockBox firmware.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/TargetStatus shows which players currently work w/ RockBox
