Why is it bad to burn audio cd-rs "on the fly"?

As in the disc image being read and the blank disc being burnt simultaneously, rather than the disc image being read first and then the disc being burnt? I always used to burn discs this way

Re: Why is it bad to burn audio cd-rs "on the fly"?

Should be OK. Best that reader & burner are on separate IDE channels.

The main danger with CDs is that a read error might leave you with a wasted CD-R.

It's OK doing it with DVD as well, providing you're not trying to compress at the same time, but the risk is much higher.

I do it with CDs but not DVDs as I'm not prepared for that risk.

Re: Why is it bad to burn audio cd-rs "on the fly"?

Okay, a couple questions

1. what are IDE channels?

2. if an audio cd-r completes after being burnt this way, and the burn was successful, is there a higher possibility of errors being in that cd-r than if it was burnt not "on the fly"? (disc image read in it's entirety first & then disc burnt from that) I only ask because in the legal live music trading community (etree, phishhook, etc.), it is often listed "do not burn audio cd-rs 'on the fly'" in the rules of traders' music lists

appreciate the help

The hard drive and optical drives are connected to the main computer by 40 or 80wire cables and then to the computer main board through the IDE channels. Generally there are two channels each with 2 devices on them. This means there can be 2 cables connecting 4 devices. A channel can only service one of the devices connected to it at time, although the other channel can be servicing another device. Each of these cable has 2 connections.
Ideally for on-the-fly copying the reader would be on one channel & the writer on the other channel.
If you open up the computer & see one cable connecting the hard drive and an optical drive & the other cable going to the other optical then this is ideal.
If however one cable connects both optical devices then this is not ideal.

This is very simplistic before I get jumped on by others here.

The relatively low speeds used for burning CDs should not cause a problem here, especially if your burning speed is restricted to , say, 24x.
What is important is the quality of the CD-R media you use.

Hope this is helpful
