| Welcome to CD Freaks. It would appear that the media you're using is unknown to your burner. There's no entry in the firmware for that media code (CMC MAG AM3) so best to try some other media, preferably DVD+R. |
| That'll be why then. This is a very recent media that's unknown to older burners. Also avoid Memorex in future as the quality can be highly variable. Verbatim DVD+R would be a good solution. |
| I've had the same problem and found that it was InCD auto formatting every blank DVD or CD. Sound silly but check that InCD is turned off (uninstalled) or if you use it then: Open InCD and go to Preferences. Click Auto Format tab. Select the Do Nothing. (Or open format dialog.) Click OK I prefer to set it to 'do nothing' and just open InCD and manually format the disk when I need one. What I think is happening, with every blank DVD I put in, a small amount of format information is written to the disk. This messes up most DVD burns. After doing this I have had about a 98% burn rate without any illegal errors using two DVD burners and the cheapest DVD-R I can get my hand on as long as they use CRC dye. On the subject of choosing the best DVD's to buy, always try a few different ones and check to see which dye is best for the burner. I found out the hard way (after buying 50dvd-r that I could only burn at 8x speed) that any CRC dye based DVD work very well with both my dvd burners. My NEC (ND-3520AW) burns at 16x speed without any problems with CRC based DVD (I get my dvd-r from ukdvdr co uk which give info of the dye for most of their dvd's). Other dye based DVD may burn the first two disk at 16x speed but the third or forth will fail with (and you can guess) illegal disk error. You can tell if you are having trouble with the type of disk by testing the temperature of the disk the moment the disk fails (touch the disk on you cheek or arm and if it feels very warm you know you have a problem). If it comes out the drive hot, then your burner is heating up the disk (changing its size/shape by a small amount) which is enough to make the burn fail. If this is the case then burn disk at a slower speed. First try 12x speed, then 8x speed. If you need to go as low as 4x speed then you my be having a problem with your burner or it's firmware needs updating or those dvds are just not up to much using your burner. Never assume that the more you spend on blanks is the better the disk, or the more likely it will burn with your burner. Buy different (dye) types of dvd's in packs of 10, and remember how successful they are. The disk you have already got will not be too new for your burner, it is more likely that your burner cannot burn to them at that speed. Hope this helps dude, Laters |
