Installed Nero 7.10.1.0 demo I downloaded from Nero's site. After install it says to restart to complete installation. Then laptop just hangs and fails to boot. I was able to get into safe mode after awhile and use system restore. I did this twice. First time I installed everything except third party stuff and InCD; second time I ran the Nero cleaner/remover tool first, then rebooted and tried installing just Burning ROM. Both times it had to install DirectX 9c despite my DirectX 10. Install directory was different partition, not typical C: drive. I keep the OS in a 20GB C: partition and put programs in D:\Program Filez\*. This is a two week old Gateway MX8738 with a clean install of Vista Home Premium and everything is updated/current and running flawlessly until I put this bloated installer to it

I love Nero 5 on my XP desktop but now I wonder if Nero is still tops or maybe I should try something new.

I've searched, and of the many problems folks have with this bloated software, I couldn't find one with my problem. I'm really afraid to try a third time. I'm considering the Nero Micro installer.

Any thoughts about what my problem might be?

Ahaa! My problem wasn't Nero at all. It was my new SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB USB Flash drive that was plugged in during the Nero installation process that was causing the failure to boot.

I'm so sorry for blaming Nero.

For the record, the SanDisk has the u3 partition on it and Vista was using the other partition for ReadyBoost. I have not yet experimented with removing the u3 app or turning off ready boost and seeing if Vista will boot up with the drive plugged in.

For now Vista boots up fine without the Sandisk plugged in.
