Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" Ok so here it my issue... I bought a Sony DVD burner (DRU-720A) a couple of days ago and have some troubles with it. It is well recognized in Windows XP (shown as "DVD-R" in windows explorer) and is said to run normally. Yet, when I try to read some data from a cd or a dvd it is amazingly slow and skips several times. When testing it in Nero Tools, I get this error: "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" I read some threads on the web and noticed I wasn't alone in that situation, the same error appears with some Pionneer burners as well. Then I got some clues to try to solve the problem but after processing the whole of them it keeps on working badly, so I don't know what to do now. The only way to make it work properly is to force it in PIO mode instead of DMA, which is a bit stupid since I won't get the same performances as what I expected when buying this so-said "top-quality" burner. Here is what I did to try to solve the problem: - set my hard disk in master position and my dvd reader in slave position on the same IDE (primary) - set the burner as master on its own IDE (secondary) - update my motherboard chipset (MSI 845E Max MS-6566, Intel P4 socket 478 chipset) - update the burner firmware to lastest "JY02" Version supplied by Sony's website - update my ASPI layer with "v471a2" version - delete the secondary IDE and reboot so that it is newly recognized by Windows XP - install lastest Nero "6.6.0.2" Version supplied with burner Here are attached some screenshots from Nero Tools, much better to see what I actually got.

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" Hello, as described in http://forum.cdfreaks.com/showthread...light=dru-720a , i get a simalar error. My Sony can burn and show the content in windows explorer, but when i try to copy files or open files on this DVD/CD, there is an I/O reading error and that´s it. So I´m also interested in the answer to this problem. Greetings, UncleFox

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" It works !!! Here is what I did: - update my motherboard chipset - update the burner firware, version "JY02" (link: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru720adwn.htm) - install latest Nero "6.6.0.2" version - delete all ASPI layers and install version 4.60, recommanded by Sony, using Force ASPI 1.7, no other ASPI layer version should be installed (link: http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm) - set the burner as master on second IDE using cable supplied by Sony (UDMA 33, 40 wires), UDMA 66/100/133 cables do not work - set hard drive as master and dvd player as slave on primary IDE, using a UDMA 66/100/133 80 wires cable Godd luck!!!

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" Hi! I have the exact same problem with my LG-4163b. While in alcohol the error is "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32)", I get a "Communication Failure" with Nero Burning Rom... The DVDs and CDs read fine, but I get those annoying messages while recording DVDs, and I have also lost many discs because of this... I'm not at home now, but I'll try to use force aspi as you told once I get there... This problem kinda worries me because my DVD recorder is also new (bought 5 days ago). Thanks for helping

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" updating my aspi layer didn't work... My last hope is that my cables aren't installed properly, so I'll try to use another flat cable... Man, I'm so sad... Spent too much money on the recorder and media

| Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" Hello everyone. I am having this same error come up with a newly installed Pioneer DVR-K05 on my Alienware 7700 notebook. Mainly having trouble while burning CD's. Nero and iTunes are giving me all sorts of problems. The overall drive performance on this drive (ripping/burning) are way below that of the crappier Matshita/Panasonic Drive that came with this Alienware 7700 (They are both installed). Performance settings are crancked on the laptop. Drive does not have any newer Firmware updates available (1.03 are the latest). Drivers/Bios on my Laptop are up to date... Hardware settings are set to DMA. There is one set of DMA settings that aren't but I am not sure how to change them, (see below). Have tried various kinds of media for burning. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. | Results of Pioneer DVR-K05 troubleshooting for communication problem. I have fixed the communication issue by: 1) Remove all drives from the laptop. 2) Re-Install New drive (Pio DVR-K05) on top slot. 3) Reboot. 4) Pio drive is now the master and burns properly. 5) Shutdown and install original drive on the lower slot. 6) Update ASPI drivers. 6) Success. Both Drives burn, but the famous and hyped Pioneer is performing shamefully. Any help you can provide me with would be appreciated. This is the current status with the drive as seen by Nero's Advanced DAE test: In addition: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lead-in -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drive cannot read data from the Lead-in -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lead-out -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drive cannot read data from the Lead-out |

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" I had that exact same error message with my new Philips burner. Tried it in another machine and it worked fine. So I put it back in my main machine and got the error message back. I had it as secondary master and a mega old 4x HP CD writer as secondary slave, so I pulled out the old drive and now it works fine no problems whatsoever. Hope this is of some use

Re: Sony DRU-720A "LOGICAL UNIT COMMUNICATION CRC ERROR (ULTRA-DMA/32) (040803)" Hi I had this same issue with my Pioneer 109 DVD burner. The drive couldnt read CD or DVD's. The autoload on a CD/DVD would bring up errors when loaded into the machine. It would sit there and flash its little light at me. Trying to burn a DVD or CD would end up with a coaster almost straight away. After looking at firmware and reinstalling Nero etc, I decided to unplug my old samsung DVD ROM from the PC, and presto the Pioneer worked perfectly. I have just bought a 2nd Burner the cost between a DVD ROM drive and DVD-RW was negligible not to get the burner and they both work fine. Same cables same install of Windows XP. Some kind of incompatibility.... Jason Canberra ACT Australia
