| I have the DRU-700A on my Sony External Enclousure which housed my single layer DVD Burner. I'm using the USB 2.0 Connection with my PIV Laptop. My old burner worked fine with its original firmare. I'm having bad burns with this burner and would appreciate your help. * Dvdxcopy: dvd burn fails everytime * Roxio 7 Platinum with upgrade: Copy Disc burn fails everytime (SCSI output device failed) * CloneDVD fails everytime with an error message "DVD9 error" * Nero copy disc burns only at 2x for 4x media. If I set the speed to 4x, the burn fails. Can someone please help me out as to which firmware should I be using. I don't have any dual layer discs to test it out and am not interested to buy them as they are really expensive. Right now, only dvd2one compression and nero works on successful burns. Even after a successful burn the dvd returns a blank screen and I have to manually press the menu button on my remote for the menu to come up. Is there another firmware that will resolve my problems. Any leads will really be appreciated. |

| Problems like this sound most like a media issue and not a firmware issue. What is the exact media type that you're using? See: http://club.myce.com/showthread.php?t=93797

| I don't think its the media issue. I used the software you mentioned and this is what I got with further info INFOSMART01: Info Smart Technology > This fails almost everytime. Note: I didn't have even one coster with my old Sony DVD Writer. RITEKG04: Ritek Co.: This fails most dvd's too. Any suggestions please. ! How are the brands of DVD's I have? |
| INFOSMART01 is one of the worst media types around. Extremely low quality and made by very shady companies. Most discs of this type are gauranteed coasters. RITEKG04 is a very variable media type. Ritek is notorious for having batches of great media and batches of media that are absolutely terrible. They have also been known to mix high- and low-grade quality media. There have been many drives that have been returned not because of a drive fault, but because the Ritek batch was bad and people attributed it to drive fault. This is not saying that it isn't drive fault (it might still be), but it's best if you try something more reliable first. Most mainstream +R media will burn nicely. TDK, Fuji, Maxell, Verbatim, Memorex, Imation, etc. Going by media code, the discs that burn the best are +R discs with the Ricoh (probably the single most common +R media code), Taiyo Yuden, and Prodisc media codes.

| Thanks for your reply. I don't get +R discs as my XBOX does not read +R's on my Samsung XBOX Drive. Moreover the Ritek on my drive works fine with few coasters, however Roxio and clonedvd both don't work with the DRU-700A on an external USB enclousure. Is there anything I could do here! |
| Also would you recommend me going back to VY02 firmware? would that help? I don't think I can go back to the original firmware as mine is an external usb 2.0 drive and I see only internal IDE drives are flashable. Thanks for your help code 65536 |
| +R discs will work very nicely if they are booktyped to -ROM (in fact, with bitsetting/booktyping, +R is even more compatible than -R). However, VY05 does not support booktyping (unless you get a booktype-enabled version from my website... see my sig). You can revert back to VY02, but while I've heard a lot of bad things about VY05, I've heard even more bad things about VY02. The Sony firmwares just aren't that good...

| i've had my 700A for around 2 weeks already. i burnt 4 or 5 dvd videos using dvd shrink and they played perfectly in my dvd player and some others...i then flashed to some patched liteon firmware...vs05 or vs08 with the feature to burn my ritek g04s 4x at 8x...i burnt a movie at 8x and it would play okay in my dvd player but not in some other ones. but somewhere in chapter 12-14 the movie will freeze...or go slow and stuff...so the burn process has stuffed up somewhere on the dvd...anyway well i figured 8x burning with 4x dvd-r media doesn't work so i burn at 4x which should be fine, like burning with the original vy02 firmware...the movie had the same problems...slow downs, the movie would stop or just freeze... anyways i flashed again to the normal vs08...with no shiftfix or anything...and burnt a dvd again at 4x...and my sister says the movie is slow or something...ugh...but i haven't seen it for myself oh well so anyway i just downloaded and flashed to a liteon vs0a firmware but also shows the burner as a sony dru-700a... hope it will burn my dvds at 4x to make perfect copies like the original vy02... |
| Hi all, I've got a problem with my sony dru700a. I have some 4x TDK (TYG01) -R media that burn a full backup in dvdshrink in about 17mins. I purchased some 8x Verbatim (MCC003) +R and found them ripping at only 4X in latest nero. I then installed fimware VY05 hoping to fix problem, the 8X pulldown in nero works but it will only rip at 2.4x in nero. My TDK-r also now only rip at 2.4X, about 40mins to rip whole disk ![]() Should I use another burning software package or go back to VY02? |
| Turns out my newly installed HHD didn't have latest driver and some DMA settings was all it needed. have ripped 8X now with help of vy05 omnipatch update. great app! |
| My DRU700A come with VY03 firmware, I would like to backup it before if I patch it with VY05. Any idea if I could rip the VY03 out of my burner so that I can share with those who have trouble with VY02 and might wan to try VY03. So far, I haven't seen any people offering VY03 yet. Any help is welcome. |
| I have VY03, but I don't think I posted the files online. I'll put them up soon. You can dump your firmware with LtnFW.
