LiteOn / PLDS / Sony Writer Discuss, Sony DRU-120c at CD and DVD Writers forum; @ Hawk@Heart - DRU-120C seems to be a packaging label for North America only as the label on the drive itself states it's a DW-G120A. You can find the official firmwares at www.sonyisstorage.com and I suggest you use these until you're comfortable that the drive will not need any warranty

You can find the official firmwares at www.sonyisstorage.com and I suggest you use these until you're comfortable that the drive will not need any warranty service. Going by this thread your drive will have MYR5. The official Lite-On firmwares allow Jitter scanning, other than that there's not much in it (or you must use modified firmwares).

Sony sells three versions of that drive:
Bulk - DW-G120A, shipped with MYS* - firmware, latest firmware is MYS6.
Brown Box - DW-G120A-BR, also shipped with MYS* firmware, although the drive is marked as -BR that should normally come with MYR* firmware
Retail Box - DW-G120A-BC, probably shipped with MYR* firmware, like the DRU-120C. Latest version is MYR5, but this is not yet published on Sony support site, there they still offer MYR4.
There is no problem flashing MYS*-firmware over MYR*firmware and vice versa. And I doubt, there is any difference.

My burner was made in Oct 06 and will be interesting to see which frimware version it shipped with.
I bet, it will be MYR5.

Here's the firmare page:
Official firmware page is www.sonyisstorage.com but they don't have newer firmware, except MYS6.

And as far as crossflashing to Liteon's firmware, Codeguys say its ok to do so as per this page...
It is indeed possible to flash a Sony DW-G120A to a Liteon SHM-165P6S if you get a patched version of the firmware. Also you need a patched version of Sony firmware, if you want to get back to Sony. But note, you'll void your warranty if you crossflash.

although I dont know of any benefits in doing so.
You get some more options to play with. If you just want to use the drive, there is no need to crossflash.

One otherthread here seemed to suggest that it would allow some benefits over the DW G-120 (cant find it now) yet another seems to ay that the DW G-120 update is newer than the Liteon's.
I wrote that at the time, Sony's MYS6 firmware was out, and this was indeed newer than Liteon's MS0P firmware. Recently, Liteon has released MS0R firmware, so this is slightly newer.

Also, I do find it funny that I cant find any info on Sony's site or support site for either the DRU-120C or the DW-G120A.
Check http://www.sonyisstorage.com for information about that drive.

..seems the $9.99 was a great deal...

Thanks for he info and links guys....although the label on the drive itself does say Model No./ DRU120C and is the "retail" version.

Went to the Sony site linked..and again, no info on the 120C although there was on the G120-BC.
And by the way..what is "Jitter scanning"?
Thx again...

Jitter, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jitter and you may also find some more here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=96
With latest version of Nero CD/DVD speed and latest Firmware for recent Liteon drives, it is possible to take a jitter diagram. Previously this was only possible with Benq and Plextor drives.

Thanks for the label-scan, Hawk@Heart. At least when you install the drive it should show up as a DW-G120A in the BIOS/Windows, I hope

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem. I have the DRU-120C and my system, like everyone else's, sees it as a a DW-G120A. My problem is that the CDR burn speed stated on the box is 48X but my computer only recognizes the max speed as 32X. I haven't looked into the DVD burn speed yet. Anyone have any idea what could cause that?

Hi and Welcome!

these particular discs are only supported @32x max by the firmware of your drive. Better quality media should work at full speed (please read the manual that came with your drive concerning the "turbo-boost" feature).

In my experience latest firmware isn't always best. Several weeks ago I got the LiteOn SHM-165P6S that made coasters with Verbatim +R and -R using original firmware, and update to MSOR would burn Verbatim -R but not +R; flash back to MSOP firmware burns all media tried thus far with no problems. A couple of weeks ago I got the retail DRU-120C that came with MYR5 firmware which burns all media tried too, and I don't plan any updates unless problems occur.

I have a Sony Dru-120c internal burner. IO have had it about 4 months. I have been copying dvds fine up until last night. The burner will recognize the dvd, a software program, or a cd but it has quit recognizing the blank media. when i put in a blank disk the properties revert back to a cd rom drive. I also get a playlist server fail... Is the drive shot or is there something I can do to fix it?

Hi,

could you please check in device manager, if there are indications of errors? Also, please check if DMA mode is still enabled (should be UDMA 4) for that drive (see here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616).

Explorer displays a DVD writer as CD writer is a common issue, but that is merely cosmetical. What happens, if you are using DVD writing software?

Ok thanks I will try that. I have discovered that my burner still works, although when I put a blank dvd in the drive changes from dvd-ram drive d to cd-rom drive d. without a disk in the burner the properties shows it as a dvd-dw-rw drive d but when a blank goes in the shows the cd rom under properties. It just statred this last night. Again thanks
