I read at Liteon's site that it can't be done with this firmware. I have another 32123s with xs0r that can do 4x (in another pc).
I checked the posts here and it looks like I can't go lower than the original firmware version on the drive.
Anyone have any ideas as to if it can be done.
I use 4x to burn svcd's and have never had any problems with playing them in anything - allows me to use the cheapest media I can find. I would like to be able to use both pcs to burn at 4x if at all possible.
Thanks

You can't, and you don't need to.

You should run some scans with CD Doctor. You'll see that 4x burning will not at all give better quality.
Later LiteOn drives again offer 4x speed, but all you get is waiting 20 minutes for a poor quality burn.

Have you ever tried to play discs which you have burned faster?

I have tried and had had issues with my Pioneer 434 being able to read consistantly at 8x I get skipping and freezes. If I reburn the same disc at 4x it plays fine. Same type media, same player, same file. I also see similar results on my Samsung dvd-d1000 (piece of crap to me, but it was free).
I always figured my player(s) didn't like 8x, and went down to 4x. No problems since I dropped speeds.

Strange...my LiteOn produces only crap at 4x...I even have discs (old Fuji 6x), which are coasters at 8x, but at least readable at 12x...
Maybe the 32123S is not among the ones which burn at low quality at 4x.

Did you also try 16x or 24x? Might not sound logical that 4x and 16x can be good, but 8x not....but LiteOns sometimes behave that way.

Thanks, alexnoe
I'll toy around with different speeds and try various players and see what works.
My problem gets worse as my family likes to borrow my discs, so I need to try to maintain mass capability.
My problem started last night when my Plextor 161040a pooched.
I had the xs06 sitting around, bought it to try using multiple burners, but never got that working right.
Its been a bad day for me and computers, pooched one burner, pooched the op system on my other pc after I pulled the extra burner out ( I have no idea what happened there - worked for a couple reboots, then stop errors).
Think I am gonna stop doing anything but surfing for the rest of the day, and then hide under a blanket..
Thanks for all of the help.

You should really include Taiyo Yuden media in your tests

As you've visited Liteon's site, try updating to FW XS0X. It's substantially more media savvy than the earlier revisions. It also allows 4x burn. IIRC, 16x CLV was pretty good with this drive.

BTW you can use any FW revision on your drive, but why go to an earlier revision?

The reason I was thinking of going to an earlier version, is i have the same drive with the prior fw and Nero lets it burn at 4x, its with the firmware that is on the drive from what I have gathered is when 4x was no longer possible, that's why I have never updated the older firmware.
I will try the newer fw as I have nothing to lose.
I have tried about 4 discs at 8x and so far so good. Playing on both of my players, no report back from my family though.
