LiteOn / PLDS / Sony Writer Discuss, OmniPatcher for LiteOn/Sony Optical Drives (v2.6.2) at CD and DVD Writers forum; I have a problem. If I swap the write strategy for MCC003 to MCC004 and select 12x as the max write speed. It shows 6x 8x 12x and 16x in CD Speed ignoring the max speed of 12x I set in Omnipatcher. 1673S @ 1693S K04 Omnipatcher 2.3.0 Nero 6.6.0.14

Sorry, I can't duplicate the problem.

Where did you limit the max speed? In LiteOn drives, the strategy and speeds come as a bundle. If you have set MCC003 to use the MCC004 strategy, then the drive will use MCC004's speed settings in addition to MCC004's write strategy. So if you limited the speed of MCC003 to 12x, the drive will ignore it if the strat has been reassigned. If you limit the speed of MCC004 to 12x, it should cause MCC003 (and any other media type that's also using the MCC004 strat) to be limited to 12x as well.

If you are indeed limiting MCC004 to 12x and CD Speed still shows 16x, let me know...

Oh so I have to limit the speed of MCC004 to 12x before swapping MCC003 to MCC004?

It does not matter anyhow. The scan of a 12x burn @ MCC004 on MCC003 looked a bit poo compared to a 16x burn on my NEC 3540 (Ignoring PIF spikes my 3540 beats the pants off the Lite-on with this media when oversped).

Or after. Doesn't matter when you limit MCC004's speed.

(Unlike the strategy changing for the other drives, OP does not actually modify the tables or copy stuff around when it does strategy reassignment. It just injects a new function into the firmware that says, "if the media code is #4 of table 4 (MCC003), then use the speed and strategy settings of media code #1 of table 4 (MCC004)". So when the drive sees that you have a MCC003 inserted, it'll go fetch the table entry for MCC004, and so it doesn't really matter at what point in time you change MCC004's speed configuration.)

Hi.

Does anyone know if Lite-On DVDRW drives (1657s and 1693s specifically) support "Light Scribe" or whatever the feature to write a logo on a disc is called?

I notice that the latest Nero burning ROM has that feature, but the
DVDRW drive can't be selected. Is there a way to enable that feature
thru firmware???

What about Sony dw-d22a ID in the "Change Drive ID" list? Will U put my drive there in the next release of Omnipatcher?

It's been since 2.0.0, for 1633S firmwares. It was our decision (and no, we will not change our minds on this) to have OP only allow renaming to equivalent OEM IDs. So if you load a 1633S-class firmware, you will get the option to rename to DW-D22A. If you load a 1653S-class firmware, you'll get the option to rename to DW-D23A (amongst others). Having a "3" instead of a "2" in the drive name is not going to be the end of the world.

Erm, buffer underrun protection is always enabled, AFAIK...

Turbo-boost? Just use a LiteOn firmware if you don't want TB. Besides, 40x is really not that much slower than 48x (less than 30 seconds difference?). Although such a patch is definitely possible, I don't think that it'd be worth the effort.

my dru710a is working good with BYX4 and alltime enabled turbo-boost would be a cool new feature for omnipatcher and i would really appreciate it.

this turbo-boost is a very annoying 'feature', just like green-only led when there's bi-color led in the drive...

I just have one wording quibble.....

In the readme file included with OmniPatcher, one section reads as follows:

<<<<Fix the IDE indicator light blink problem

(only for some Sony firmwares) There seems to be a bug with some Sony firmwares where the LED of the optical drive will affect the LED of the hard drive. This is most easily observed when the hard drive's LED blinks in perfect unison with the burner's LED. This patch should address this firmware bug.>>>>

--This is NOT a firmware bug/problem, but more of a feature. I have recently acquired a Sony VAIO with a SONY DVD RW DW-D22S (now at DRU-710A BYX4 w/ bitsetting fix), and the light on the front of the drive is not in ANY way visible. The case has solid black plastic making up part of the face, and the only area left to see anything through is the slot that allows the tray to extend.

So the only way to tell that the drive is in use is to use the IDE LED, and only the green LED firmwares with this feature will illuminate it. (I have used the 832S-series firmwares, and the SONY firmwares with the red LED enabled only lit the IDE light when reading a disc/checking for a disc.)

Although I realize that most, if not all, people here are not using a VAIO, I feel that the wording should be slightly tweaked (It threw me off when I was deciding whether or not to use the firmwares as is. We don't want people to think that there is something wrong with the firmwares, right?).

Thanks for taking this into consideration.

Oh, so that's what it's for. Bah, it's Sony's fault (and Apple's fault) for designing their computer bays in such non-standard ways with custom drive doors and whatnot. For most people, this is a bug. But you do have a point. Well, I'll change the wording, then. I must say, good timing on your part; a few hours later, and it wouldn't have made it into 2.4.0's list of changes.

Unfortunately, the rpc1.org downtime didn't happen at a very good time. See the thread about the rpc1.org downtime in this forum for a mirror link if the rpc1.org server is still down when you read this post.

Anyway, for most current users of OmniPatcher, 2.4.0 doesn't offer anything new. There are a few minor bugfixes changes here and there, but nothing really to merit upgrading from 2.3.1 to 2.4.0. Expansion of support to new drives (LiteOn combo drives, LiteOn DVD-ROM drives, and 3rd generation slimtype drives) is really what 2.4.0 is about. It does mean that the current users of combo firmwares can finally select more than 3 speed options. (stock combo firmwares are mirrored)

Finally, in order to make things work efficiently in OP, the read speed patch method used by OP differs from all of the read speed patches that currently exist for the DVD-ROM and combo firmwares. Although the patch is implemented differently using different code, the end result *should* be the same as before. I've done a bit of testing and I've also double-checked this new patch, so I don't expect there to be any problems, but if you experience unexpected problems with the OP-patched DVD-ROM or combo firmwares, please post about it!

Sorry 2.4.0 took so long to come out. It required some reorganizing of the underlying code that took a bit longer than expected. It also didn't help that I kept getting sidetracked with things like real life (what's that? ), IMs from my ex, the reception of a slimtype 3S firmware, this recent server downtime, etc...

The first post has been updated accordingly.

Is it possible to put Omnipatcher 2.4.0 on the codeworks.cdfreaks.com site? I've been waiting for this release for the Imation ID's.

It is on the codeworks site, but I will post the link (sorry if this is redundant):

*link to mirror removed now that the site is back up *

@C64K: *Off topic* Yeah, I guess I did manage to make it in time. I just felt that you should know it and change the wording as you see fit. I am glad to be able to help out when I can (and about the custom case thing--other than the need to use the HDD IDE for the DVD drive status, the setup is pretty cool. Not literally--the processor is running at 60 degrees Celsius, and the fans speed up to try to keep it at or below that temp. and the general case temp has varied from 49 degrees at bootup to 60 degrees after running for 24 hours. Otherwise, I like). *On topic*

With v2.4.0 I no longer have to wait for the combo drive read speed patched firmwares to be released , you can just do it yourself from a bin file, very nice indeed.

Sony drive firmwares normally handle CD at 40x max, unless the eject button is held for 5 seconds to turbo-up for the inserted disc.

Not sure if other firmwares with the Sony ID patch have the same feature - in not, then that's one way to eliminate the "slow but safe" feature.
