Please Help: no sound from dvds

| hi, i hope someone can help, please.  i have 2 dvd drives on my pc. one is a lite on dvd player which i have had for a year or two. the other is a new LG cd/dvd burner, which i have had about a month and which is working ok. its just the past 2 days when i put a dvd (original) into either drive to play, there is no sound! i have cleaned the discs and played them on my dvd player (on tv) and they work fine, sound and everything. but no sound on my pc. im running xp pro and other than putting the new cd/dvd burner in a month ago, i havent changed any programs/settings. any idead please?

| 1/ In control panel open "Sounds and Audio Devices" 2/ Click "Advanced" in the "Volume" tab 3/ Check all volumes are up and not muted

| Can you play audio files or CDs with WMP? I take it you have normal sounds coming out of your speakers.

| What player are you using? Have you tried to reinstall it.

| WMP is my default player, but i have the same problem if i try to rip the dvd too. theres no sound on the files

| ok, no sound with nero showtime. hmm, got a message with it saying "DOLBY DIGITAL 2 CHANNEL DECODING ISNT AVAILABLE. THIS FEATURE CAN BE ADDED BY INSTALLING THE DVD-VIDEO PLUG IN THE NERO 6 RETAIL VERSION OR THE WEB PACKAGE" and it gives links to find out about them and buy them. bugger that oh! i have sound with vcl.  how can i use that fact to back up the dvd onto my hard drive??? i use DVDshrink and sometimes DVDfab6

| If you get sound with VCL then the problem is with WMP. A windows update probably upgraded WMP and took away the ability to play Dolby Digital audio without a license.
