Just purchased a Sony DRU-840A as a second DVD burner. The first is a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B (whatever that is). It came installed in my Dell computer. I thought it was beginning to act a little flaky so I bought this second one. I think this is a brand new model that just came out. I can't even find it on Sony's site. It shows as being manufactured in June '07.
I only have one IDE controller. The hard drives are SATA. I have both DVD burners set as cable select. The main question is performance. I can back up a DVD using DVD Shrink 32 in under 30 minutes on the original drive. The same DVD takes over an hour and a half using the new Sony. Why is this? I thought a drive that was manufactured a year later would be at least as fast if not faster. Are there any settings I'm missing?
Nero INfoTool 4 shows the original drive with a read and write speed of 48x.
It shows the new Sony with a read speed of 12X and the write speed is grayed out (???). Any help would be appreciated.

You might want to check that your drive is working in UDMA mode 4 in Device Manager. If it isn't, uninstall the IDE channel that the drives are located on.
Shut down the computer, change the drives to master and slave [jumper the LG drive to slave, the Sony to master], and reinstall them as master and slave as you jumpered them.
The Sony may or may not like being secondary to the LG, and that would just be a precaution. Plus, some drives with some computers don't like cable select.
Restart your computer, let everything get re-detected, and try again. If you need any more detail, don't be afraid to ask.
BTW: with a read-only disc, such as a DVD video disc, InfoTool will only report the max read speed supported, 12x for those discs.__________________
