I was hoping I might get a little help with my ihbs112 v2 running PL05...

I bought some Taiyo Yuden dual layers on ebay (TDKBLD-RFB-000) and so far I'm 2 for 2 on coasters.

However, tiring of this I bought a single DL BD-RE disc (figuring I could use it to test things out) and it worked with the same exact image and settings in imgburn right off the bat, first try.

Is it possible that this drive just hates that media?

I can attach a log if it would be helpful. The BD-R DL's didn't even try to burn, they immediately died at LeadIn. Tried with both OPC on and OFF (but received an OPC warning when it was on). No OPC errors with the BD-RE media.

Also, just out of curiosity I attempted to reflash PL05 or downgrade to PL04 and both EXEs are telling me that there is no ihas112 installed? Weirdness.

Any help from anyone who's got the drive would be really appreciated, pulling my hair out here.

I have to think it may be helpful to resolve the communication issue displayed by the firmware flasher first. Try uninstalling the drive in device manager and reboot. Or switch it to another sata port/controller.

Thanks. Makes sense to me. Are the majority of folks here having the best luck with PL05 or have there been better successes crossflashing or using a lower version?

I also noticed there are "C" versions as well, is it possible I mistakenly flashed a "P" version to the drive that I should not have?

How about BIOS settings? Is AHCI ok?

I'm trying my best to get everything straight as I can't think of a way to test this out without potentially burning a 3rd coaster of my precious DL BD-R. I was hoping the DL BD-RE would do the same thing, but since it worked without a hitch I'm stuck at the drawing board with these DL-BDs.

Did you flash the drive successfully at one point? And now find that same flasher unable to see your drive? What OS are you using and are you running the flasher as administrator?
If you have a secondary sata controller on your machine, you may want to try running the drive in IDE.

You may also wish to be sure to uncheck "BD-R verify not required" in Imgburn's write settings. A few people have reported this making a difference in successful burning. Imgburn's author tried to duplicate the problem without success, but it may be a problem that is hardware/software/media dependent and it may help.

Alternately, you may try another burning software like power2go. It is rare that Imgburn is not the best choice for burning, but I've run into an exception to that rule once or twice over the years.

That settings doesn't appear to do anything unless 'hardware defect management' is active on the drive - because only then will the drive be verifying as it burns and there actually be something that potentially isn't required.

I'm sure I said all that before though

If you aren't going to use the full capacity of the disc, tell ImgBurn to format (full erase with spare areas enabled in the settings) your BD-R. That'll make the drive activate its hardware defect management and it'll be able to remap bad sectors etc. It will burn a bit slower though due to the automatic write verification.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Yeah, I was able to flash the drive to PL05 and now none of the flashing software seems to recognize the drive since then. I've tried rebooting, no luck. Just using the motherboard's SATA ports (6 onboard) so maybe I'll try changing ports.

I'm using Windows 7 and always logged in as admin, by the way.

It sounds like there's not a lot of settings are gonna help me...I'm just burning an image here (log attached) so do I even want to format? I know formatting makes sense for rewritable, but these are write-once.

If anything from the log jumps out at anyone I'd love to hear opinions. Same exact settings and ISO image worked with a TDK BD-RE Dual Layer disc. Just not with the TDK Dual Layer BD-R here (twice with two different images).

That looks very much like what happened with about 2/3 of spindle of DL Verbatims I had. In fact, one of the main reasons I bought a BR drive is that I was sick of wasting money on crap Verbatim DL media. I was burned twice by two separate spindles and I just couldn't take it anymore. Anyhow....the last spindle I had before the camel's back broke was poor burn after poor burn and then, for the last 2/3 of the spindle, I started to get the error you are getting....

You have to format the BD-R to enable spare areas and hardware defect management. The disc still appears empty once you've done it, it just has a little less free space - because it's allocated some sectors to be used by the defect management routines.

So where the drive has reported a 'Write Error' there (and essentially wasted your disc), it would instead remap the bad sector to a sector in the 'spare area' and should in theory continue on its merry way.

Interesting...Well it sounds like it's worth giving the format a try just to see if this is indeed a bad spindle and just has errors in certain spots. Losing a little free space is no big deal.

txenglan - When yours was doing this, was it immediately at the start, right after leadin? With both burns, it appeared to write the leadin, and then immediately errored out right off the bat. Didn't even get to 1%.

Actually, yes I think that is exactly when it was happening! I believe it also happened about 25% of the way in but if I was asked to estimate how many times it was either I'd say:

9/10 - exactly what you described; and

1/10 - larger percentage of the way through a burn

Perhaps it's time I just order another spindle of 10 BD-R DL of a different brand and hope for better results.

Lightning - Looks like I already had "Prefer Format Without Spare Areas" unticked.

By the way, is PL05 the firmware most here are using? Should I even be looking to flash anything else? I admit it's still weird that I can't re-flash it, but IMGBURN and Windows 7 are seeing the drive just fine.

Could the SlySoft Virtual Clonedrive interfere at all? I don't have anything mounted but I know that tricks the system into thinking you have another drive...Still, IMGBURN looks like it's seeing everything just fine, and it burned the same image, same drive, to a BD-RE without issue.

Too bad the problem isn't reversed, I'd much rather be burning BD-RE reversible coasters than BD-R ones that are costing me $2-$3 at a time!

Having 'Prefer Format Without Spare Areas' unchecked already doesn't mean anything unless you actually initiate the full erase. The program doesn't do it automatically for write once media.

Okay, so now I feel like a dummy - Where in the program is the command to have it just perform the full erase without a burn of anything? I assume that's what you mean, no operation other than performing the format on the blank BD-R. How do I do it? I must be missing something obvious.

Click the 'Erase Disc' button in the 'Destination' box when you're in Write/Build/Discovery mode.

or

Right click the drive selection box and pick 'Erase Disc -> 'Full' off the context menu.

or

(when you're in a 'Mode') 'Tools' -> 'Drive' -> 'Erase Disc' -> 'Full'

Thanks, easy enough, how's the log look?

The process reminded me of what happened the last time I tried to burn my image to these discs though. I heard the drive spin up and spin down about 10-20 times, like it could never get going. It did it a few times when I just did the format, too, so I was waiting for the worst, but then after a minute got the lovely success window/chime.

Yup that looks ok.

Now when you look at the disc info in the box on the right, you should see it has less available space.

Fingers crossed you'll have more luck with an actual burn now. Make sure you uncheck the 'BD-R Verify Not Required' box now that you actually want it to make use of the spare areas you just created on the disc

I do wish that I hadn't tossed the 2nd gen 112 that I bought into a build for someone else shortly after starting to test it out. Before I started burning the TY DL's. Darn it! Could possibly be a lot more help for you if I hadn't. 1st gen iHBS112 w/CLOK firmware has done very well with those TYs.
I would definitely temporarily uninstall any disc related software you've installed since your last flash to see if this allows your flasher to work again. May be an upper/lower filter installed that is interfering. I am keen to learn if this problem is more hardware or media related. Returning to PL04 and clearing the OPC on the drive is certainly one of the options in that quest.

@LUK- Sorry for the sacrilege and thanks for your expertise

Sad to say it looks like I'm at Coaster #3.

I switched SATA ports and the PL05 flash was able to see the drive. Strangely, it would not allow me to run PL04 (claiming the drive was not there) but let me re-flash PL05 just fine. I then shut down, full power off, and rebooted.

Used the disc I previously formatted and an image a lot smaller that the available space on the disc.

Results were the same, if not much longer to fail. I notice the drive spinning up and down about every 20 seconds once LeadIn finishes, and the Drive Buffer going from 0, to 100, to 0, to 100, etc.

Here's the log:

What I'm trying to figure out now...Do I have a bad batch of discs (the 3 BD-R are all the same spindle) or a bad drive? That BD-RE burned like a champ, though.

Now when you look at the disc info in the box on the right, you should see it has less available space.

Fingers crossed you'll have more luck with an actual burn now. Make sure you uncheck the 'BD-R Verify Not Required' box now that you actually want it to make use of the spare areas you just created on the disc

Two things I notice right off the bat. Play it safe and specify your burn speed. It appears that in spite of formatting the disc, the defect management is listed as not active.

*cough* that's my fault... program error! *cough*

I noticed it yesterday and thought it was weird so I did a little debugging and found a little typo in my code - so it basically always says 'No'

It has been fixed for the next version.

Hey, glad I could help find a bug and help other people out, so that's cool. If that fixes the issue, that would be great.

I'll wait for the fix and then try the same image once again after doing a format.

Another question for all you fine folks while we're waiting...I noticed that there was definitely not enough space to fit one of my backup images which basically requires the entire disc space to work -- Am I out of luck with that image now, or is it possible some spare area formats will give me enough space, and it's going to depend on the disk?

If this is a situation where getting different media, or even a better drive, would not require the format, I'd explore that.
