Re: Liteon iHBS112 & 212 12x BD-RW

Thanks, vroom!

I have one more question:
Because I'm a BD newbie I'd like to know what is the right format for burning BD-R with simple data - I need to backup my docs, photos, video clips, etc.
I know that the UDF 2.50 is required for Bluray structure (Bluray movies), but are the other formats allowed for a BD-R disc just with files?
What's more, I'm still on XP - is there any driver to read UDF 2.50 ?

TIA

Re: Liteon iHBS112 & 212 12x BD-RW

I remember a few years back there was a link for the panasonic UDF drivers for XP, however right now i have no idea if they can be found easily here. A search might help.

The best way for you, since you are using windows is to make an ISO/Joliet compatible disc, this should be compatible with all systems.
However it should work fine if you also add the UDF 1.02 (ISO/Joliet/UDF). If you have a -RE disc you can do some test burns and see what is the best for your needs.

I was also reminded by Albert in another thread how highly drive-dependent having OPC enabled can be. Does vary from one drive to another. Don't hesitate to clear the drive's OPC history and try burning with OPC off to look for a burn quality difference.
One disc was burned with OPC on and a second with OPC off. The disc I was backing is a brand new copy with no scratches of any kind. I did a scan quality and surface scan with three different drives, Lite-on iHBS112-29, Pioneer 205 and Samsung SH-B123L and all reported the same error on both discs. I don't have Opti drive, I use Nero disc speed.

I never thought of updating since I wasn't experiencing any issues. I will now, thanks.

Thanks LUK! I didn't even notice that. I'm so accustomed to perfection from you that "trouble with burning software" is at the very bottom of my troubleshooting check-list .

You can use Burnplot to view your burn/verification graphs too. Two burns with the same glitch? You may want to rule out other hardware issues by burning from ISO's. BdRebuilder has an option to automatically create one for you. You can also use ImgBurn to create one from video or data on your hard drive. Take a look at those ImgBurn graphs to see if a buffer underrun issue might be involved. As you say, it could also be a weak drive or drive not playing nice with your SATA controller. A burst rate test and TRT would be helpful.

Could you post a screenshot of the flash type and flash ID? Can your drive perform ODC quality scans with no problems?

Thank You for response. The screen is below. The drive is 112-115.
I 've just received my first BD-R discs, so my first ODC scan has yet to come

Re: Liteon iHBS112 & 212 12x BD-RW

Updated to the latest firmware and I did a backup of another movie. Verfication failed again wit the same error. Since I do not have any issue with a Samsung DVD rewriter and the fact that the Lite-on I bought from Amazon was a return, it is fair to assume that this one is a lemon. This one is going back to Amazon.

Bummer. You tried burning another rip to see if the first one somehow was creating trouble?

Thanks. Yes, that looks like we can rule out buffer issues.

I can give you the most likely explanation. Tools like COdeKing's flash utility and EEPROM utility have protections built in to them to help protect novices from accidentally trashing their drives. If I took a flashing tool and modified it to remove those safeties in order to permit me to deal with a new drive, it would be irresponsible for me to make it widely available. I would be well aware that some people would end up ruining their drives . At the very least, I would end up spending far too much of my time trying to help the 90% of people who should not be attempting to use such a tool in the first place put the pieces back together after incorrectly using it.

I'm quite sure 2601 is the kind of person who's smart enough to know what he is doing in this matter .
If a safe method becomes available, I'm sure it will be shared.

Awesome burn, cezar. It would be nice if we can get the Panasonics for cheap here in the US.

Thank You, sir!
The Panasonics are not cheap here either - they cost $1.70 each when they're sold in 25-packs... But they are archival quality

Now, the drive's learning process for this media is very good - the 3rd burned disc:

Made in Japan
MID: MEIRA1 (001), burned @6x

All my discs were burned under XP SP3.

I call that cheap for a Inkjet printable that bears the name Panasonic and burn extremely good and are archival quality. How do you find the quality of the printable surface ?

Thanks. I wanted some feedback on the quality of the printable surface on the Panasonic and whether is it hub printable or not. No rush, whenever you can is good.

I can tell you that the 4x Panasonic's print surface is not as attractive as the burn quality, unfortunately. They are hub printable and wide sputtered. The "white" print surface held next to something like a Falcon/SmartBlu looks more like grey. Very dark white by comparison and not the same contrast or pop you get from a good bright white printable.

Judging by those scans, I do need to get a closer look at the new Panasonic 6x BD-R's very soon . These discs may actually be able to beat my best SmartBlu and Falcon(under 1.0 LDC avg.) burns. Not sure they could beat jamescooley1 with a good batch o' SmartBlus on a good day .
