It's going to hard to ask big online vendors to check for build date so I will probably look at the Lite-on 112-29.

I was thinking the same. Unless you run across one on E-bay where obtaining the info is a little more realistic.

^^^Excellent burn. That looks awesome. If their longevity claim is true and believable, I don't think there is any BD-R out there that could touch them at the price they are going for. Great find deanwitty.

Wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I kept this secret stash of gold all for me . One thing I should have mentioned. The Sony's might not be the best choice for archival. Their scratch resistance is not the best. Not much better than dvd's. On the other hand, do me a favor. After you burn one of those Smartblu's, take it out and get it full of fingerprints. Now wipe it off briskly on your pant leg (provided you're not wearing those leather studded pants you should have thrown away years ago ). Check it out under a good light. Zero scratches. Wipe it with your shirttail. Zero scratches. They aint exaggerating about their super duper scratch resistance. After being so gentle w/ dvd/cd's all these years, its a real treat.

LiteOn has released a new version of the firmware for the iHBS112-04. The firmware is version PL02. I have listed the link below where you can download the executable installer file. As with any firmware update please use at your own risk.

Yes, BD-R seem a lot more scratch resistance than dvds. I have the same experience with the Verbatim. I will surely do the scratch resistance test when the Smartblu's are delivered today. I am going to be a bit harsher on them than you though, I am going to use my leather studded pants instead

What exactly is the difference between Liteon iHBS212-08 and iHBS112-29 ? Is the iHBS212-08 the retail version of the iHBS112-04 or the iHBS112-29 . I am trying to get the iHBS112-29 since most of the scans posted in this forum seem to indicate this drive has excellent writing performance and a reliable disc quality scan. My budget is $100.00 and I can't find this drive for that price at the moment.

From all the disc quality scan posted here, the iHBS212-08 is not as good as the iHBS112-29 so they can't be the same drive. The firmware are also different, aren't they ?

If I remember correctly the Pioneer BDR-205 burns them much better though.

I have been reading a lot of user reviews where they state that disc burned with Lite-On IHBS112-29 is not readable by the PS3. Is this old news that has been corrected by firmware update ?
